Im mainly talking Rap but any genre is fine too & any era. You can assume mainly online cuz are usually more chill/reserve/realistic/fair irl.
My top 5 picks are Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Future & Kanye.
All 5 artists that do really well, probably the top 5 today overall n consistently, but their albums are either really loved or really hated on an individual level. there's rarely any in between even tho they all still great & are the top cut. I think most people will have at least one artist each of their main genre they really dislike & really like that do well.
The love & hate is like really passionate, split & vocal.
I wonder why its like that, is it just the nature of being really popular and successful? Is there any outliers on any side? Kinda interesting
S/o Drake sxn & user @martian_master for the spontaneous idea it got the rusty gears squeaking & sparking
those are some of the most popular artists. i think popular artists just end up having their music exposed to people who wouldn’t normally be fans, leading to a lot of negative reactions. then they’re popular so obviously will receive lots of love.
Unfortunately that’s just public discourse around music nowadays. It’s not rly new or anything either I feel like for the greater part of the decade ppl are always rushing to call something a classic or trash

Kendrick doesn't belong here at all. He's literally the most critically acclaimed rap artist ever and he's generally well received outside of trolls and contrarians.
I'd say Eminem, Drake, and Cole fit this more than many. Their discographies are very polarizing.
