I started doing this way back when the last Harry Potter book was about to be released and it made my experience of reading the book way more enjoyable. Because there was no false expectations being set up.

These days sites like reddit/youtube are full of speculative fan theories that I think partially or completely f*** with people's experience and expectations when consuming popular media like Marvel/DC films/shows etc. Saw this happen with WandaVision and I'm sure it will continue with the next slew of shows about to drop on Disney+

So yeah if you wanna enjoy a show/film, enjoy it for what it is, instead of setting up false expectations through reading fan theories.

Y’all: “It’s a good thing they are releasing it weekly. Gives fans some breathing room to discuss, theorize and make it an overall experience”

Also y’all: “Lmfaooo who told you to have theories or guesses about the show. Your own fault tbh”

The Game of Thrones community on Reddit was a peak example of this.

One nutcase theory I still remember is when they introduced Robb Stark's wife's character(different from the books) in the show, they were making theories that she was actually Tywin Lannister's spy and she will be the one who will slit the throat of Robb... all the while carrying his child

How can you hype up and imagine the wildest s*** in your head and be disappointed when they don't go that direction?

I think what he’s saying is that people shouldn’t be so mad if what they thought was going to happen doesn’t happen. People tend to have some false ownership of properties nowadays and it really lets them dictate their thoughts on it.

This is different than them not liking a creative decision, because if something truly doesn’t happen or is even hinted at then why be mad?

But apart of enjoying a show like Wandavision is thinking theories because of how they design their shows. It’s damn near impossible not to. For example how do you see QS randomly show up and not think Fox X Men theories?

  • Mar 6, 2021

Also it’s not as simple as “don’t read fan theories”......you’re also forgetting to add in to not read/listen to interviews because in regards to Wandavision, Elizabeth and Paul was hyping up a big “Luke level cameo” character was gonna appear on the show. That’s not fan theories. That’s straight from the source. So hearing that what you expect to happen? People’s expectations are gonna naturally rise and then be let down when they find out they were referring to white vision

But OP wrote it as if it’s as simple as “just don’t read fan theories bruh”

You can get hip to a theory simply having a convo with ya friend about the show. “Bro did you see QS show up?” And then a conversation about it sparks from there.

When you into a show and have friends who are, theories are gonna naturally fly around. It’s not just from “reading Reddit theories”

And if you watch interviews of the cast you’re gonna naturally think theories off that based on how they was gassing s***.

Everyone just gotta accept that when you invested into a show it’s Damn near impossible not to think/hear theories. Only way around it is to basically only watch the show, then afterwards not think about or speak to anyone else about it. And avoid interviews from the cast too.

Can't imagine watching bland mcu content without theories about where it's going. Basically the best thing about it.

  • Mar 6, 2021

It’s a delicate balance because I believe part of the enjoyment is the ability to theorize. The problem isn’t theorizing, it’s entitled pussies

Wish I experienced Lost era where forums were brain-storming to discover what will happen next.
