    Shiny suit era was death

Who was expecting a classic from an east coast legend back then

Late 90s DMX had dropped two high selling albums in the same year, was the rise of Rocafella in terms of popularity etc.

It was more than just shiny suit rap, and without Mase you arguably don’t get Kanye lol

Let them hate NY man. The southern and west coast rappers of that era they cape for will also say NY was going crazy back then. They just refuse to accept that and that sounds like a personal problem.

For sure I didn't say it was all bad, but the gap between the death of Biggie and the release of Blueprint was rough. After that you had 50, Dipset, etc.

X was immensely popular because he had a personality and very unique approach to the NY sound that didn't feel desperate to revive golden age rap. Most of the legends had been trend chasing and X was just different.

Bro Biggie died in 1997. DMX blew up in 98. Hard Knock Life by Hov blew up in 98. And there’s a bunch of artists like Big Pun, Mos Def and Busta Rhymes that were catching good runs in that time period.

Wu Tang sophomore album dropped and sold a lot of records in that time frame too.

You’re erasing a lot of s*** in between Life After Death and Blueprint lol

This is why the coastal discussion was more fruitful and interesting to me cuz that album was produced by The Bomb Squad, an east coast production team that mostly handled Public Enemy’s work.

Shows you how much of a cycle all this really is lol

Yup. Exactly. And The Bomb Squad were an incredible team

We had Hov (an NY rapper) write Still Dre (A WEST COAST CLASSIC TRACK)

I know it’s rap and it’s competition so we gotta say my coast is better than your coast

But at the end of the day, every region is influenced by each other. Even back then, and even more so now

    All regions deserve respect

It’s just odd cuz it’s not even like a coastal debate moreso people acting like certain artists / movement didn’t exist lol

Bro you and I both love music and care about the s***, we both know great music drops in every era, nobody said no good s*** was dropping between 1997 and 2001

The point is that the NY stranglehold came to an end and the NY legends started looking outside the region for inspiration during that time. The most innovative music of the time was coming from the lineage of Screw, DJ Paul, UGK, etc and it was entering the mainstream through tracks like Big Pimpin

People are criticizing Azealia because she's still stuck in that oldhead mindset that NY swag is the only real swag and everyone else is lesser I spent half my life out east so I'm not just hating

Your initial post was saying that nobody was expecting a classic from an east coast artist back then when there was plenty.

And the NYers were collaborating with outside producers but a good chunk of the biggest hits from the east coast still had an east coast sound lol

And saying the most innovative music from late 90s / early 2000s was coming from only Screw and UGK’a lineage is dishonest cuz it was a plethora of sounds from plenty of producers like the Neptunes and Timbaland, the Ruff Ryder’s sound like Swizz and them, and the rocafella producers like Just Blaze

And Neptunes came in by way of being Teddy Riley protégés, Teddy is from Harlem lol.

S*** just weird lol the hate for NY runs so deep cause it's the cool internet thing to do. Whole time rap fans from NY and artists from NY do f*** with other regions. The history shows it whether they like it or not. That's why I don't waste the time arguing with these mfs

I'm telling ya man it's just some kinda deranged insecurity.

I didn't say just any east coast artist, I specifically said legends who were consistently at creative lows during that time

Was gonna correct you claiming Virginia's Neptunes as east coast when that gets muddled but if you want to credit them to Teddy then OK

Alright so name the legends you’re talking about cuz I’m confused lol

  • The revisionist history itt from people who not even from NYC and weren't even alive during the east coast's peak and downfall is honestly hilarious. It's okay to admit you have no idea what the f*** y'all are talking about lol

As I said earlier, it's the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Educate yourselves before yappin. It's been so many docs, movies, interviews, etc about the east coast's rise and fall off that feature people from all over the country, not just the east coast.

@edumist and Chicago’s gutter butt in here continually crying about Drake Stans going too far and getting personal over their favorite artist when mind you they both sat here and laughed at a user’s supposed d*** addiction over Mr. Morale being slammed as an album.

    Just ZERO self awareness.

I feel like people forget that she has legitimate mental health issues. I'm surprised she still gets taken seriously.

Even though she's right about Doja's new track and a large portion of Kendrick's stans. Lol

But a rapper with a ghostwriter?
