i feel like thats a reductive way to look at making art/music... optimizing streams. i think damn is kinda like what you're describing and all of his music isn;t heavy but he makes what he makes.

I've just never understood the thought process of making songs like " Kim", " We Cry Together", etc where its like there's 0 chance in hell anyone is going to want to come back to that. You could remove those songs from the albums they're on and you wouldn't miss a thing. Obviously he's free to do whatever, but like I said I've never understood the " why" behind it
I wasn't a big " Damn" fan either

making songs for the sole purpose of having people stream it is lame as hell if you’re a person with artistic integrity. and especially if you’re an artist like Kendrick, who has nothing to prove anymore when it comes to commercial success
Mr. Morale is my least favorite Kendrick album but i still really admire his intent with it. instead of following up DAMN with another project of radio-friendly bangers, he decided to make a much more personal project reflecting the life changes he had gone through over the past 5 years. i respect that, even if it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea
i think people (myself included) will appreciate it more over time. but like you, i’m hoping his next album is more fun and laidback

I agree that when folks put a song out that's blatantly obvious that its TikTok bait or whatever( Toosie Slide) that's corny as hell. I went into MMBS hoping it'd be better than damn, but, I'm starting to accept that I can really only enjoy Kendrick in doses here and there. The kendrick album I would want to hear from him, I know I'll never get from him, and thats perfectly fine.

i mean i thought damn is kinda in the lane you're asking for of fun and laid back (compared to the rest of the discog), but i guess not.
but they might think of it more like an idea that works to them that they want to get out that makes a lot of sense within itself.to me we cry together is like that and it's neat to pull it off, but it's a bit on the fringes of what a song is.. or just unconventional. dont like kim tho lol. i get u. songs gotta go somewhere as an idea and they put it on the album

What album would you want to hear from Kendrick? Because S80, GKMC, TPAB and DAMN is a pretty solid range, Idk what else you could expect from him

E-40 is the odd man out and even he constantly released bloated albums that have way too many mid songs to consider the album great.
Heck even thoug SchoolBoy Q is better than Kendrick I still never listen to him.

How you forget to mention Nate Dogg idk because honestly I’ll take him over anyone you listed. Just goes to show west coast rap is not the best and it hardly ever was. West Coast rap is better when it’s smooth and grooving but it’s barely ever like that anymore.
These days west coast rap has no identity it just takes from older styles and copies/changes them a bit (to pimp a butterfly for example) or it copies current styles of hip hop (everyone loves to copy Travis Scott and Young Thug style these days and of course Drake)
