One of my problems with the term “beat selection” is everybody doesn’t get the same beats to select from. Budget and who you’re connected to and signed too is a big part of what dictates what kind of beats you get.

I’m assuming this came up because of the Kendrick and Lupe debate and people coping and saying Kendrick is more skilled because actually beat selection is a skill. But dots music doesn’t sound the way it does because he’s some kind of genius of picking beats lol, Sounwave is just better than Soundtrakk

You're undermining Kendrick's skill as a producer as Sounwave and just about every other producer he works with directly comments on how hands on he is with sound selection and adding on/taking out elements of a beat. You're also not taking into account the skill of sitting on beats and waiting for the right time to use them like we saw with MTG/NLU and both alchemist and mustard saying they sent those beats to Kendrick years ago

Thats why underground and upcoming artists have ever since been influencing and changing the way mainstream music (rap) sounds

Ofc connections and deals are important but

Thats why a good portion of rappers are now rapping on oversaturated heavy distorted bass beats

Also at this point of time you can pretty much learn how to make any type of beats for free on youtube

Upcoming artists link up with not so known producers and make crazy songs that don't sound like they were cooked up in someones basement

so being able to be a good curator and knowing what beats to select/use is as important as being able to sound good on them

producers are way more important than vocalists imo

Or maybe I’m talking about the fact that every post he makes is Drake related regardless of the intention?

Don’t hurt yourself trying to use that brain of yours lol slow down

The beat is part of the a rap song and important. Travis Scott’s music is good cus of production. Not his nonsensical lyrics lmao

His lyrics are poetic yall dont get it smh

Not everything has to have a clearly defined meaning

  • Quas

Ross knows how to pick beats, but then he ruins them.

Westside's arguably the best in the underground with beat selection.

  • The coolest thing as a rapper is when u come up with words u didnt even know u knew, s*** is so fye when someone uses a rare ass word

In that Convo I was also think Lupe suffered from not having a circuit of signature producers like Jay, Kendrick, Drake

If one doesn't produce themselves, this is subtly a huge aspect

Yeah exactly. And that’s really not part of their SKILL SET as a rapper it exists somewhere else

I think lupe just picks the best beats from a variety of producers instead of relying on like a go to prod and i think thats why his music is so eclectic which is dope

  • A rapper’s ear is major

People give Travis a lot of s*** but a big reason for him being where hes at today is because of this

  • NorthShoreWhiteGuy

For a dude of his status, Wayne's beat selection skills are pitiful.

His seemingly nonsensical word choices do end up painting abstract imagery and cool linguistics. Some of Travis verses remind me of less skilled Nutmeg by Ghost so I agree

That’s valid I’m not tryna undermine it

That just makes it really not beat selection tho. Production isn’t beat selection

It's a different aspect but he is skilled at both. They discuss his beat selection skills here

not true @op his main mans is Soundtrakk.

    How?

Being a producer rapper and being a good beat selector are different things. Kendrick and his team craft the sound from scratch so how I don’t think that skill is “beat selection” it’s another skill

I know he picks some beats but that’s not his primary method

If you gave billy woods all the beats on DLow Curry and gave Bossman the Aethiopes instrumentals, it would result in two 10/10 albums
