back in January, 6 dogs died due to seemingly unknown causes at the time, as of now the details are which are still murky, but tragic regardless

unlike many rappers' deaths, it didnt get super widely publicized, probably due to his relatively niche status and lack of widespread notability past his breakout set of singles and initial fame (there was a thread here though to be fair). because of the lack of major label relations beyond co-signs to artist labels, his posthumous album Ronald was not widely publicized, and did not manage to explode him to new heights or popularity the way death did many other artists in the same musical scene as him

unfortunately as well, the album comes as a clear growth for him as an artist, showing growth in song structure and subject matter from his soundcloud days, alongside his great ear for catchy hooks. it's always sad when artists die young (he was only 21), or for that matter pass away early at all, but it's always just more depressing when artists pass away right before work they're not only excited about themselves, but also stages their clear artistic growth

its not a perfect album by any means, but i wanted to showcase it one last time before the end of the year, because it's inevitable given his lowkey status and lack of widespread fan favor, he's unlikely to be generationally remembered posthumously the same way someone like Juice or Peep will be for this style of music.
it's a call back to the initial soundcloud scene from the musical era of 2016, a simpler time, a simpler era, and when this sound was only emerging, minting new artists by the month.
the same way at the time the sound was carefree and emergent, it was constantly underlined by this sense of dread and predictive tragedy, and unfortunately that proved to be prophetic, as now not only has the sound and era passed, but so have almost all of its breakout artists and pioneers

it depresses the f*** out of me because he was a master at hooks and had a mad ear for production, but unlike many of his contemporaries he never really got to work or collab with lots of other artists in the genre.
a lot of this was his own decision as instead of fame he decided he wanted to be more lowkey and work at his own pace and sensibilities, but a lot of it was also cut short by this tragedy, as even Benny Blanco (who signed him) said he had big plans for the future
it's a real shame because Starfire, Turtles, and Takashi Murakami are some of his best songs ever and had a really clear and interesting direction he was going in without abandoning the strengths and styles he was known for

He wasn't a huge artist, and he blew up around the time the soundcloud era was peaking, next to the time No Jumper was still one of the most influential in the scene for introducing new artists (despite him not being fully associated with them).

Unlike a lot of artists instead of chasing clout in the industry or exploiting his newfound fame, he laid pretty low and retained a small fanbase and just decided to work at his own pace. Unfortunately this lead to a lack of work compared to most of his contemporaries, but by comparison he was a super engaged guy, he DM'd fans on a regular basis for example. One of the things he was super influential in was the whole "putting soundcloud rap songs over vaporwave anime or simpsons clips" aesthetics.

besides songs in op i'd recommend Faygo Dreams, Flossing, Mazi Love (songs he blew up off of), and then some of his early work like Someone, Beautiful Whips, Frozen Tears, Spaceship

it really f***s me up as well because it came out of nowhere and was so random. it feels wrong knowing this is it and there's likely no more music coming and he'll never have a chance to reach his full potential as an artist.

Ngl I’ve only heard this song by him which is pretty damn good

But was actually surprised to find out he’s actually been around in the scene for a while and didn’t quiet blow up like that
Really feels like he could’ve gotten more recognition in his lane

    RIP

The whole situation is pretty sad all around. That said he didn't blow up because he didn't really want to - there's a lot with his career which was all over the place. He was supposed to have a show on adult swim for example but it got canned. He also has extremely religious parents and apparently they also capped a lot of his early career which is why there was such a gap between his first songs and his later stuff. He also had a lot of industry issues and wanted to move away from the industry which I think is why he didn't want to blow up really. It's just crazy because he really got notoriety around the same time as a lot of contemporaries in the scene and worked with a lot of the same producers (captaincrunch, nedarb, bighead, danny wolf, etc.) and even worked with a lot of bigger people in the wider music scene (benny blanco, cashmere cat) but you dont really hear about him that much. he went in such a different direction than others from his same era.
