So since there is nothing better to do i wasted a few hours of my time listing the Top 5 Hip Hop/R&B Labels from 2000-05'

    Rules are simple
    1. The label must be started by a artist OR Mainly Hiphop/R&B (I did exclude bigger labels, but left in the likes of Def Jam/Jive)
    2. I will be ranking them by;

of END OF YEAR singles - It easier to calculate which songs actually had staying power throughout the year.

of Albums that PEAKED at #1. Its easier to calculate. Also it shows how popular that artist was during the release of said album.

NOTE: This isn't really about the artists, but the labels.

Please feel free to chime in and add things to it.

    2000:
    1. Def Jam ( 5 Arist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)

    3. Bad Boy (4 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    4. Jive ( 3 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    5. Roc a Fella ( 3 #1 Albums)

Interesting notes: South really had momentum single wise, while the North Dominated with Album sales
Nelly had 6 weeks with his album Country Grammer at #1 (Eminem & D'angelo had 4 weeks)

    2001:
    โ†‘1. Bad Boy (8 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)112 Had 3 singles chart also having a #1 peaked Album

    โ†‘5. DTP (1 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums) All Ludacris
    โ†‘5. No Limit (1 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)Snoop dogg was no No Limit

Interesting Notes: R&B Dominated the top 100 Charts as they did last in 2001 as well.. that will change pretty soon knowing how history turned out.

    2002:
    โ†‘1. Murder Inc. (5 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Album)
    โ†‘2. Def Jam (3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Album)
    โ†‘3. DTP (3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    โ†“4. Roc-A-Fella (3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘5. Aftermath (2 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Album)

    • It was a 3- way tie for the 5th spot with Aftermath, Fo'Reel (Nelly), Star
Trak. Gave Em the 5th spot since he had more weeks at the #1 spot for his album
Interesting Notes: Nas held #1 Album for 6 weeks Would say the North won this year. Rap starting to take over the charts.. Also Ludacris underrated

    2003:
    โ†‘1. Shady (7 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums) 50 Cent had 6 Total singles in the hot 100 + 8 Total weeks at #1 for his album
    โ†“2. Murder Inc (3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    -3. DTP (4 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    โ†“4. Roc-A-Fella (3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘5. Soso Def (2 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)

Interesting Notes: Obviously 50 cent took over this year

    2004:
    โ†‘1. Roc-A-Fella (6 Artist Sinlges/ 3 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘2. Gunit (5 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    -3. DTP (5 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘4. La Face ( 5 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘5. Grand Hustle ( 2 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)

Interesting Notes: Not much to say, Usher Won, Ye debuted, and its pretty much the same as 2003

    2005:
โ†‘1. Gunit (10 Artist singles/ 2 #1 Albums) All of Gunit artists Charted
    โ†‘2. SwishaHouse ( 3 Artist Singles/ 2 #1 Albums)
    -3. DTP([3 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Albums)
    โ†‘4.Grand Hustle ( 4 Artist Singles)
    โ†“5. Roc-A-Fella (2 Artist Singles/ 1 #1 Album)
    Def Jam tied
Interesting Notes: Aside from G-units dominance, the south took the W this year.

    Also:
What i did learn from this. The North and South are pretty close in terms of hits/Albums however you want to debate, but what i can conclude is the West Coast is irrelevant .

I might continue on with from 06-11.

is it really fair to compare def jam to artist run labels?

Anyways, Rocafella, Ruff Ryders, and Aftermath ran those 5 years

That was the only label i was deciding to keep in or out. Honestly if it wasn't for their R&B Acts, they wont make the list lol.
