Have you been there?
I'm in china rn, if you ever come here expected to get ur personal space invaded multiple times wherever you go (e.g getting your photo taken without your permission or people constantly staring at you and I mean constantly)
You'll also get refused service from anything from taxis to hotels just not taking you in. When I first came here, the guy who helped me get settled didn't get time to book me a place to sleep beforehand for my first night, his first choice of hotel we get declined cause they flat out said they dont take black people
Last year when I came back I waited in a line with several other people to get taxi's, the taxi's would drive up and people would climb into any taxi they see, the first one i saw literally just shook his head when he saw me coming up to his taxi.. so I had to take the one after
I've heard other stories of people getting their hair or skin touched. Also black people are far more likely to get kidnapped and have their organs harvested than any other race of foreigners.

i knew about how the people literally stare at black people..but the touching
The kidnapping
Please OP visit my country Namibia, trust me you'll meet some lovely people over there, my only issue with travelling in Namibia is that you'll encounter more white tourists than black tourists
Visited Japan for two weeks. Never encountered any racism just a few stares. The people were very kind and helpful. Beautiful place. I recommend going during spring.
I really hope so because its on my bucket list, where did you travel in Japan?

When is the best time to go?
Lot of baseless posts here. Most of Asia are super chill and accepting of tourists, the more money you put in the better treatment you can expect ofc but in general people rarely act out and become hostile. The common stereotype of blacks are actually Africans that gets a bad rep for being scammers, but these only a concern if you want to incorporate and live in
The SEA countries would be on top of all recs, foreign countries but the use of English is widespread and tourism is always an emphasis, you also get incedibly so much out of your moneys worth. Worry instead about the tourist scams and really just respect others being an outsider

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto. Seeing the ancient temples was something else. Especially as the cherry blossoms started to fall I have some wild stories while I was there. I was going to visit again this year, but the virus canceled that for now.
When is the best time to go?
if you're an outgoing person go in December, you'll be more likely to encounter fun interesting people during that time because the entire country is basically on holiday. If you just wanna be left alone go any time between March and May

I was planning on going during the olympics with a friend but we might extend it to late next year

been to China as well i think some of your views are over exaggerated but as far as personal space being invaded and the hair/skin touching more than a handful of times it's due to genuine curiosity and not out of maliciousness you have to remember in PRC they block a massive amount of free information including social media to the general public.
more than half of the chinese don't even have preconceptions of us bc the faint majority has never even seen us in person we're mythological to them in a sense bc the censorship in that country is rampant and if we're seen it's from a western stereotyped standpoint projected from a western film they've probably seen but more so 9 times outta 10 it's out of excitement.
regarding the organ harvesting bit i can attest to that when i was in Kyoto, Japan a dutch woman followed me like 5 blocks in broad daylight and i just thought it was the strangest thing i dipped on her quick and took the JR to Nara.

You will enjoy it. I promise.
Yeah we were finna take a train there too for a day. When do they do that blackface celebration? Im just tryna avoid that
5th of december but in a city like Rotterdam theyre becoming a lot less bold with that s*** out of my own experience

which ones were over exaggerated?
which ones were over exaggerated?
hailing a taxi from a random person, but i just thought to myself maybe it's the fact i knew mandarin and it unnerved them is probably why they stopped for me nvm i don't wanna invalidate your experience.
noticed in this thread some of y'all are overly wary of xenophobia in SE Asia that you are infact being xenophobic bc you're not reading the room properly in your environment while being present there i can promise you as a black man living in tokyo and has traversed all over SE asia there's really little to no static in my transgressions as a black man interacting w/ others all around overseas.

Yup. A lot of people who have never set foot in Asia are letting their own prejudices create narratives in their heads
lol sounds like your friend was exposed to getting finessed in Thailand rather than experiencing racism he fell for something than got strip showed.
Thailand's goat would recommend Pattaya as far as I've been all over there's a huge black military/ex military presence spread out over Thailand so that's an odd deduction to me but ion wanna invalidate what your friend felt but to me it feel like he got finessed for just being a gullible tourist.
would recommend Kandy in Sri Lanka one of the coolest places you can possibly fade.
Well I really dont know about the racist people he really mentioned it just briefly but he wasnt finessed he was drunk and his shoes were stolen. Thief was in for a suprise cause he hid like 50 dollars worth of money in his vans So I doubt that there was a racist intention behind his robbery.
