I would argue it says more about the age of the userbase here

I quit at gen 4, but if you go on the subreddits and see the similar threads to this one, theres a lot of beloved pokemon post gen4 or even 5, and a lot of that also has to do with the way the company markets pokemon differently to different age groups or even within stuff like pokemon go (which is lacking a huge disparately amount of newer pokemon, gen 9 has barely anything released still) - theres a ton of baller ass new pokemon I never knew of until recently from phatump/trevanant to ceraludge, it just depends on if youre playing the games and exposing yourself to them

Gen 4 is peak pokemon tbh, Platinum and the Johto remakes are literally the greatest pokemon games of all time
