Streaming changed the way sales are calculated.

Its not the same as people purchasing albums
You can just put the album.on repeat all day and it'll run the numbers up. Those sales aren't an accurate gauge.

Yeah streaming has changed sales, now it's even harder to even sell as much with streaming, why do u think u rarely ever see rappers do 200 plus numbers now. The fact that drake did 700k, which 163k were physicals shows u that he had impact with that album lol

imo the album has to be relevant to be abum of the year. 75k+ is an arbitrary number tho . I think if an album did 20k first week but then it took off and went platinum in 5 months then yea it could count for aoty etc.

You're completely doubledutching between points. Idk if you're doing it on purpose.

    How?

I'm saying numbers are inflated these days.

You cant base impact solely on numbers, especially not in the streaming age.

I get what you’re saying but I don’t know bro. Sales have a very loose correlation to quality.

You cant. However Sales and impact are more strongly correlated than you're saying.

If the #'s are big enough, it's almost certain that it was impactful. Doesn't mean that albums with smaller #'s can't have impact.

And streams are more accurate when it comes to consumption than album sales imo.

rappers do 200k+ a lot. Big rappers do 200k+ all the time. First week sales really havent changed tbh

  • I don't really know or care how their sales did, but A Written Testimony, Black Habits, Descendants of Cain, Unlocked, and King's Disease have been some of my favorite rap releases this year. Gotta say 2020 has been pretty good so far in regards to rap albums. It's an okay balance of good and trash.

Legends Never Die isn't really rap. Wouldn't call any other 75k+ albums good.

    Moneybagg's Time Served did 66k.
    Herbo's PTSD did 59k.

Okay then my cousin has album of the year

If you think so. Diversity of opinion is good for music appreciation, rather than having people list the same couple of artists/albums repeatedly. You know even normal people enjoy stuff that isn’t actually popular, not just forum nerds

Herbo's album was really good. Top 20 of 2020.

That album did 700k fw and is 5x platinum, impact has nothing to do w quality. People were playing all of scorpion when it came out and were invested in it

How is that impact, it's literally popularity lol

Rappers dont do 200k alot now lol, probably had the most hype with 2020 and still didnt crack 200k, theres only a few that actually do. Streaming an album 1250 = one album sale

  • Sep 5, 2020

Caring about popularity is silly, but my mainstream aoty would probably be EA. I also liked Polo G's album

But an album like Alfredo might not be "popular" but its impact was felt among heads who really know the genre and the culture.

Fred might never go platinum.but its accepted hes one if the best doing it rn.

    That's impact imo

The amount of impact that an artist has is very much closey related to their popularity or popularity of their albums.

How can an album like say a written testimony or pray for Paris have more impact than 5x platinum album with a diamond single like scorpion.

These artist drop these projects and the impact that can be seen is the amount of people that respond by listening to it.
