i never even bothered to hear yardbirds in stereo
can we consider Becks Bolero 1966?
recorded all the way back in May but got sandbagged for ten months i guess so Becks solo stuff didnt interfere with Yardbirds, then sandbagged again when it only got released as the b-side to godawful Hi Ho Silver, and sandbagged yet again when it only got released on an album 3 full years later for Truth
apparently enough people in the industry heard it when it was recorded for it to be considered influential in the year it was recorded.
could've been high-key one of the most cataclysmic recordings in rock instead of just low-key with the right media push and confidence from the record company
Pretty sure Jazz took SOTY as we always do. Can’t wait for the James Brown era fr 🔥
Crazy how much clout Elvis got over Chuck Berry, Little Richard & Ray Charles. What a damn shame.

66 looked to be a down year for whatever reason. Miles dropped 3 records following along with others. Other albums were duplicates is not extensions of prior albums. Wow lol I stand corrected.

which year out of 67-71 are you taking 66 over?
(could ask the same question for some other years too for sure imo)

yeah i dont really have too many jazz albums from '66, and a few of them were recorded in the previous few years like Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil and John Coltrane's Meditations anyway

Exactly and even Coltranes Meditation respectfully is more avant garde to capture commercial success let alone general sales.

u buggin
hard for me to put a year like '66 above the others where i have so much fewer albums from it. obviously more singles in '66 too ofc. but still i can never see it outweighing the fact that i only have about 20 great rock albums from 1966 and 20 more good ones. compared to like 50+ great ones from those other years where the depth just kept increasing
imagining a marathon of 1966 rock albums vs those other years, quality would be on point but the marathon would just be shorter
trying to whip up my list now

You still might not be wrong though
just happened to be some hipster white boys playing it

I know what you mean and when we're done the decade I'll take all that into account but there's just something about the production in 1966 that sounds like the absolute golden era for me
Every year after it just gets too slick except for things like The White Album and Village Green and Crazy Horse and Stooges and precious few things

trying to comb through some of these psych/nuggets compilation to figure out which songs are from 1966 right now
i've started putting the years in the song titles for compilations like that recently but not in some of these older ones ive had for a while

with that statement on the production im just surprised youre not more of a mono purist still, that epitomizes that feeling i get from it. which isnt my absolute favorite but i think i know what you mean
was just listening to Blonde on Blonde stereo and think i actually might prefer mono partially cuz of that
so much of the late 60s-early 70s rock stuff was still so raw and rawkin (increasingly so) that slick isnt the word id use to describe the production at all. more like it brings more clarity so the performances and show more of their power. id guess id say they removed mostly thinking like harder rock here, like imagine Zeppelin or Sabbath with 1966 production and how theyd actually sound neutered af
