Blasting my '67 playlist at work with some cool old dudes and the only thing that was wild enough for them to inquire twice throughout the day was Beefheart
I thought it was gonna be tighter than it is but Safe As Milk definitely aoty.
Honorable mention to Forever Changes which is a wild sentence.
Unofficial aoty Basement Tapes
I'm perpetually unable to decide between doors s/t and forever changes for aoty

You said it doesn't matter but your choice could be so much easier if the record company let the doors release their album in August 1966

Forever changes probably very slightly edging it out anyway

the quicker you move along the better tbh
i can see you liking the rest of it. not sure if youre planning to do Mirror Man next (released in 1971 but recorded in 1967) but its pretty jam oriented. 1972's Spotlight Kid is definitely his most accessible release up to that point and its actually pretty solid. Then Clear Spot is amazing and I can't see you disliking it

Wolf, Waits and Beefheart got the gnarliest voices of all time

Yeah definitely a lineage between the 3 too
ngl John Wesley Harding hitting alot harder than most this fancy ass psych
such an austere, pious vibe really gives it a certain transcendence with all these religious parables
tough to parse through but have a unique power
on that note guess who started to get their mojo back in '67 :elon: @twinkletoez had to take it to church to find himself again
