hard to pick single highlight for Zappa since Absolutely Free is basically all a big step forward for albums in the more "progressive" rock format with suites etc. maybe Brown Shoes Don't make It even tho i don't uphold it as a career highlight like some do. a few of the parts are annoying
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNULHGsy3SEreleased in May '67 and the contrast from the rest of the summer of love is so massive
appreciatethe response but

im not an expert on '67 Dead but this is generally agreed to be one of the top performances of their early set centerpiece Viola Lee Blues (their first big jam vehicle)
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAgsApoaenIand some good but embryonic versions later in the year that would be much more fleshed out in 68-69. the Anthem of the Sun songs
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhNKoJnrLQAthey were good but '68 is the real year where they ascended higher and surpassed Jefferson Airplane as best San Francisco band. also the year where they became overwhelmingly psychedelic instead of just a bluesy band on acid. there arent really a ton of good quality recordings from '67 either and the setlists were not that diverse
ah yeah i know that first one pretty good noodling tbh
second one new to me but also not bad
appreciatethe response but

yeah a song that annoys even me sometimes will never be the one to convert zappa haters

Honestly how are such ramshackle performances so good
his funniest lyrics and most ravishing ballads on there
Garth and Robbie adding some real instrumental magic too

love how different it is from the electric trilogy too, it’s just absurd the amount of material he conjured up in the 60s

It's even different from John Wesley Harding which is an austere classic and also from '67
