Defecting Grey one of the earlier forerunners of heavy psych i can think of tbh. the loud parts
Vanilla Fudge cover of You Keep Me Hanging On in 67 might be the first bonafide example of the sub-subgenre i can think of. Hendrix still seems like most of a forerunner (the key forerunner) because its more virtuosic and bluesy and less caveman brute force relying on sheer heaviness

i think Becks Bolero paved the way for Defecting Grey and everything tbh. Pioneered space rock and hard rock in one stroke.

did pretty things hear it in 67 tho?
also doesnt sound like hawkwind to me much but yeah ofc beck and his other stuff along with Jimi are the fathers to all the intersections of psych and hard rock basically

was thinking this was '68 so i might have forgot to post for '67 but this is one of my all time favorite "nuggets". complete with bizarre electronic effects, esoteric lyrics and a heavy hypnotic instrumental break

i get the impression that people in the industry definitely heard Becks Bolero and Pretty Things were in the thick of it at Abbey Road so i would surprised if they didnt hear it. I know Jimi did.

another game changing aspect of Easy Rider was the use of a bunch of contemporary hit songs (which Dennis Hopper easily convinced the labels to let him use because it was unheard of and they didnt realize what they were handing him), most of which were on the radio in '68 when they were filming it. Man just shot whole scenes around some classics
the beginning of "MTV cinema"
