for rock? apparently it never got quite as big in colombia for some reason so they didnt have as many bands. at least not this far back especially (theres a big 90s one). Peru had a few but not too many even tho rock was/is very popular there
also i think for a lot of these countries the health of the scene was really determined by the dictatorships and s*** like that. like mexico had some good s*** in early 70s but the government banned rock and it had to go totally underground for like a decade. the mexican woodstock equivalent scared the s*** out of them. seems like all the countries had to have their rock musicians flee the country at one point
that netflix doc was very illuminating for the cultural/political contexts
Los Shains is the other band my friend told me about, I already told him i knew Los Saicos and they are very proud of them. Los Shains debut was alright, looks like in 1968 they just made an album covering english songs in spanish

it kinda seems like all those rough young garage bands down there worshipped the Byrds more than anyone besides Beatles. interesting. maybe some of the other big ones were just a bit harder to copy
Cool Byrds cover
Yeah each country down there has its own complex history with authoritarianism
I'm a little familiar with it because of cinema but they're all different. Ironically when Spain got too haywire back in the day Luis Bunuel made his films in Mexico for a while cause they were chill at the time.

That song. It’s the same lyrical and melodic content as a lot of their 90’s stuff. The chorus melody specifically sounds like something Rivers would have written.

Guess I could see why rootsier folk rock would appeal down there. Closer to their traditions than what the Brits were doing.
