ive thought as those 3 as the funk goats for a while but expected you both to uphold your god Sly as up their with them which I disagree with
I was just coming back to say Sly is the Son though lol @twinkletoez
George Clinton himself would tell you nobody touching the heights Sly reached

so youre taking sly above p funk, prince and james brown?

I didn't say that
just saying that George himself considers Sly one of the founding fathers
As you know Prince has my favorite song amongst any of them and I'd probably say Sly and George have equally potent heights. nobody touching P-Funk consistency and quantity though.

Well, *"founding father that reached untouchable heights"
Weird you don't see Sly as being way up there but whatever
I need to see George on this farewell tour to complete my having seen the Holy Trinity live
is he still dragging Sly along?

more like undeniable founding father and massive influence that didnt fulfill his talent to become a goat artist like the other 3 to me
was revisiting a lot this year and cant get behind any of the albums other than Stand and Riot being great. (still pretty good, occasionally great singles). even Riot somehow shrank on me even thought I thought i saw the imperfect magic before

Sly is a genius songwriter but not a “language inventor” like them. Norman Whitfield deserves credit before him.

Clinton burnt a hole in his brain with lsd. Flash light alone clears most Sly

yeah i dont see the genius songwriter part
You guys are crazy. Reading a bunch of articles and interviews with artists from back then will tell you thatnobody was as influential and doing as much to push the boundaries of black pop music as Sly. Whitfield would never have gone that way without Sly blazing the trail. And Clinton just couldn't manage the same impact until several years later.
"In 1968, Sly & the Family Stone had a hit with their single "Dance to the Music", and Temptations member Otis Williams introduced Norman Whitfield to the band's music. At first, Whitfield did not want to produce anything with such a radically different sound. "I don't want to get into all that crazy s***," he said. "That ain't nothing but a little passing fancy." Within a few weeks, however, he had created the backing tracks for the newest Temptations single, a psychedelic-styled number called "Cloud Nine", and stuck primarily to such songs well into the early 1970s."

never denied that. just saying the actual quality for me is just good-to-great tier and not f***in james brown and prince tier

You recently proclaimed the outro to Stand! as the zenith of funk tho

Holy Spirit is a massive title, Clinton earned that with those constant extended jams.

the amount of ground Clinton covered just in 1970 alone was insane
been pulling my hair out trying to decide which of these is going to end up in my top 5 SOTY for this year
two of my all time favourite P-Funk and neither are extended jams

Don't like this master of it, but a fantastic track
!https://youtu.be/oSXsl6V7c8Y?si=xNHJGIy2TZWm2217which song? doesnt work in Canada

i am always a bit unsure of how much credit to give clinton himself for the pfunk goatness tbh. especially when guitar/bass/keyboards are such a big percent of why i stan them. feels like im doing a disservice when i talk about him instead of them as a whole

idk he was the bandleader I assume he was steering the ship for the most part. appears to have a songwriting credit on like every P-Funk song. I know what you mean though.
Do you guys end up voting at the end of each discussion for each year? Never really noticed this thread until tonight.
