i didnt listen to a ton of the live stuff but definitely a few good moments. but overall struck me as him sometimes playing really fast and decent blues but also seeming a bit sloppy and lacking finesse/some ideas
mostly judging off ther 1968 live album at least, mightve got better

ngl im gonna be revisiting that Purp cause Ritchie had some cool ideas
just too bad they're no Plant/Page, Ozzy/Iommi, Keef/Mick tier combo. Ritchie sounds like much more of an inventive original than his singer.

one of the best things to watch with friends

the real duo of deep purple is Blackmore/Lord
and Gillan is in the same company with those in terms of influence
archetype for skilled and bombastic masculine hard rock singer in a way that the others werent
people like Rob Halford, Bruce D***inson, Dio, David Lee Roth are sons of Gillan more than anyone else

have you heard the stuff after Gillan left at all though? era with coverdale/hughes sharing lead vocals has some great stuff. even though im not big on coverdale
and apparently you liked Glenn Hughes in Trapeze

didnt hear trapeze doing anything like that double drumming on Fireball title track. or child in time for the dramatic vocals. like Exciter and something like Victim of Changes/Beyond the Realms of death. feel like you can definitely hear blackmore in the guitars of Priest
Purple came first anyway and probably birthed trapeze themself

Trapeze song Jury is the most Priest thing I've ever heard
much more than even Child In Time
Seafull also has more of a Halford purr than Purps gutteral dude had

But yes Purp probably fathered Trapeze but they got topped imo

for Halford i feel like its more about the skillfulness than sound of the voice. (and other metal vocalists in general)
honestly one way you can look at it is a kind of cheesiness that Ozzy/Plant/Mick didnt have and you can trace that line of cheesiness all the way through to heavy metal, power metal, glam metal etc.

Yeah that operatic campiness had to start somehow. Jagger could be camp in a different way tho, on things like Emotional Rescue.

yeah definitely and mick birthed all those anyway

Thoughts on the new album? Obv way too slick but I can't believe how good Mick sounds
unfair to other singers

its ok but i think its in my bottom 3 albums from them. didnt really love the way mick sounded on some of the songs but sounded good on others. sounded slightly worse with each listen i gave, dont really think the riffs or song ideas are that strong theyre just okay

Yeah the late career bar for me is really high after the gems Bigger Bang had
even though that was half my life ago. Saw that tour too. This ain't touching it. Hopefully they come out with a better send off for The Self Proclaimed Greatest Rock And Roll Band.
