have we not mentioned the left banke's monumental pair of 66 singles yet itt?
def among the early works that defined baroque pop along with the obvious beach boys, beatles, etc ones. both amazing but ive always been more partial to Walk Away Renee and itll have a good place in my final list
I take back what I said about Roger not being a masterpiece
especially now that I have some of these in superior mono version
Maybe not but those albums are still kinda considered the pinnacle of the art form to a lot of people so I won't hold it against them. It boils down to having a consistent aural aesthetic throughout, a sweet cover and most importantly the fact that the best songs on the album weren't the singles
also having a certain variety is probably a key aspect and makes it distinct from jazz/blues/country/folk albums that obviously have a consistent aural aesthetic but its just because theres less stylistic variety. and in the case of jazz especially it just feels like the albums are entire works much more than single songs for the whole genre in general. thats why its harder to single out individual jazz highlights for the best of year list
and even though those 65-66 Dylan albums have less variety than the Beatles, Mothers, VU. Kinks etc etc switching back and forth between wildly different sounds I still hear enough of the variety and changes in them to place them in that category instead. but they have a lot of qualities of both styles of albums and are right between in a way, which is cool and definitely a sort of central placement within the spectrum of popular musics

crine at you now coming around to the mono superiority for a lot of this stuff after some years of me trying to convince you.
knew i wasnt mistaken in thinking you totally stanned roger as well
but yeah i could not imagine listening to the Yardbirds in stereo, just feels like a mismatch for the sound. a***ogous to how hearing a lot of 70s+ rock in mono would seem, it would just feel off

Half these are still better in stereo
I told you I went through the Kinks and Small Faces song for song years ago to decide which versions I liked better between mono and stereo. I was aware mono can be better.

ok i might have spoke too soon then. yeah gonna need you to eventually realize that there is no point in listening to pre-Arthur Kinks in anything but glorious mono. hope it wasnt just a case of you falling in love with the stereo first then quickly comparing to mono and wrongly disregarding it due to the slight differences not accustomed to
ive never even heard any small faces in stereo though
13th floor elevators mono tho

I thought you'd be able to tell by my acknowledgment of paperback writer mono that I have no problem admitting when the stereo version is inferior

yeah The Yardbirds heard the sonic variety on Rubber Soul alright
needs more wobble board
There's also quite a bit of eye rolling and backhanded compliments about how much time the Beatles had begun to start spending on their music in the studio but I don't think people at the time realized Rubber Soul only took them 2 weeks

wow trying to make an actual ranked list for 66 is actually f***ing impossible
i guess this is how hard its gonna be from now on. might have to limit it to 1 song per artist
i definitely have more 10/10 songs from 66 than 65 tbh

I was going to say if you pull up with a measly list of 10 songs again
please PLEASE don't puss out and limit yourself to one song by any artist I want to see a fully fleshed out list with a bunch of songs by a bunch of goats

its already hard enough to rank the top Beatles, VU, Beach Boys songs among themselves and even harder to try to mix them together for a proper ranking
ranking albums is a lot easier than ranking songs too tbh. but yeah list will be bigger regardless because there are too many that cant be left out
