Their sophomore album, released in 2010, did 481k first week. Their third album, released in 2011, did 347k first week. You probably know their hit single "Need You Know." It's like their biggest hit.

Many country artists were out here doing damage from the 2000s into the 2010s but Taylor Swift got all the publicity because she was young, female and was outselling most of them but trust, they were out here.

Anybody who was a popular mainstream musician and couldn't do numbers in the 2000s into the early 2010s was a flop. The smallest artists were doing 100-200k first week.

Every time one of these all time chart threads comes up it just solidifies that Em is the GOAT at this numbers s*** lol sheesh

the sales based argument isn’t based in something sounding bad tho the sales argument is strictly these numbers that’s literally all it is

yea but if all the highest selling albums are highkey buns then whats the musical basis for that argument?

the basis is that if that many people listened to it, it physically can’t be bad.
the answer for this would be that they just have massive followings that will gobble up anything they do, or that people are just stupid and don’t know good music they just follow trends

sorry for the brief answer just hopped in the whip

my roommate makes this argument every day

theres 0 correlation between quality and popularity. so many factors go into popularity besides music quality its stupid. image luck connections timing etc

ik u arent saying this is ur perspective im just providing my reasoning for why i dont think popularity and quality are correlated

i don’t agree with sales arguments but who’s to say all those people have s*** music taste and don’t know what they’re listening to? because essentially that’s what dismissing popularity is. trend following based in 0 thinking into the music they’re actually consuming

most artists who get a lot of plays are major label artists

that means only those wiith enough funding to get radio play/promotion are put on

its not about people listening to the music and liking it its simply a matter of it being presented to people in the first place
