    I'd say it's definitely a statement
Kanye, a black man chooses the white man's Jesus as king whilst bey/jay go on a spiritual journey to connect with their ancestors, black is king for them, rejecting western values (forced on us through slavery)

It's an anti-coon move if you wanna be blunt about it, kanye is perceived as a coon by woke people (and other black people too)

Was thinking something similar. It’s crazy to think that Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s award speech to cape for Beyoncé’s video and now her and Jay don’t seem to f*** with him at all. He did say some wild s*** about them during his rants, so I can understand why though.

In terms of people thinking he coons, he says and does some wild s***. But I don’t really think he means harm by it. Acquired thousands of acres of land as a black man in America and depending on how things go with him bringing these Yeezy factories to America, he could be in position to do some great things economically for black people. Depends on his intentions though.

A lot of celebrities virtue signal and make PC statements to appeal to appeal to the social justice/woke crowd without doing a whole lot other than that. We’ll see how things play out.

I often asked the Africans i know the question why they follow a religion that was brought, and often forced upon them, by the European colonizer

They always just laugh it off tho. It's part of their lives now. They want to be christian
But they dont reject their own values at the same time. Tribal culture still very strong, but theyre also christians
I think that woke s*** is over-simplified. It's not bad or good tbh

yeah you're right, I'm only observing roughly what goes on online, the vocal minorities with strong opinions about blackness and such.

If you listen to the way Jay Z speaks about Black ownership vs how Ye does I think the picture is pretty clear

    What's being culturally appropriated?

Thin line between paying homage and appropriation from all the discussions I've witnessed. You could phrase an argument that Beyonce's deal with Disney comes with the exploitation, and homogenization of African culture.

Me personally, I'm 50/50 with it. As 1st gen Nigerian-American, I see it as a weird in a sense of the homogenization. Shes presenting many different cultures as if it's all one thing, when all these cultures vary from ethnicity to ethnicity, tribe to tribe etc. Then the business side, rather than just using African artist for the Lion King soundtrack, it had to have a major artist like Beyonce attached to it, in order to give it validity. At times what she does comes across as pandering and performative to me.

On the flip side of all of this, it grants Africa positive exposure. Beyonce is one of the biggest artist of our time, so anything attached to her name is going to have many eyes on it. Which in turn could bring forth new investments on the continent with this massive show case. She worked with many African artist (primarily all from West Africa tho) on the album. This again grants these artist increased exposure which is good, hopefully births new opportunities for them. Then the actual people on the continent who are aware of this I'm sure the majority of them are happy to see Beyonce in someway showcasing aspects of their culture that they can identify with.

Well common misconception is that Christianity came to Africa via colonizers. Christianity was present on Africa long before the colonizers we refer to ever set foot in Africa. Christianity was present in places like Egypt, parts of Central Arica, Ethiopia and parts of eastern Africa which iirc is the first Christian nation or Christian African nation in the world.

Way I see it, even if she focused on one heritage from a specific country, outsiders will always find a way to homogenise it and label it as the experience all over Africa.

I just like seeing positive images of Africa once in a while too. Not the lil baby with a buzzing fly looking for a penny every single time. There's that part of Africa, and that needs fixin. But there's so much more that's beautiful, and I'm kinda glad Bey is tryna capture that. Long way to go but we takin a step
