The 40-year-old comedian talks about the artists and albums that have meant the most to him through his life
At 35, I was a father of two, and getting ready to leave “SNL,” and it was pretty terrifying. I was looking forward to not being on the “Saturday Night Live” schedule anymore. I loved the community there so much, but the actual act of performing live was getting really hard for me. I was looking forward to not doing that.
I was shooting this movie, The Skeleton Twins, around this time, and I was listening to Kendrick’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city a lot. It was kind of like listening to Bob Dylan—Kendrick is just someone who can get to finite humanity, to the very basic thing. This album got me back into hip-hop.
When Kendrick played “SNL,” it was a big deal, and I was really nervous. Typically, I would barge right in and be like, “Hi! Big fan. What’s going on?” But with Kendrick, I was just like, “What do I say?” He was sitting with Dr. Dre, and I went over and was like, “You guys were great,” and then I just kind of walked away. Kendrick is another level. He’s a genius. He’s doing it all. There hasn’t been a single misstep.
