Random thread in the music section got locked but in it, I said black on black crime is a myth. A lot of people clowned me for it lol so I wanna explain this for anyone who has maybe not heard this from someone who works in the field. IT WILL BE LONG, FEEL FREE TO CLOWN ME IN THE COMMENTS! ILL RATE EACH ROAST FROM 1-5

So all of this has been routinely regurgitated by activists and non-profit organizers (I work closely with some in Chicago) but here goes: the phrase “Black on black crime” is a surface level understanding of violence.

The violence we consider “black on black crime” can almost always be explained as a need based crime that has nothing to do with the race of two parties. The reason violence between black people is relatively the same as violence between white people/Latine people/Asian people/etc is because of their proximity to each other and the need, and not because of their race.

Every non-profit that addresses the root causes of violence is going to address financial security, food security, mental health (if there’s funding), and education. Segregation caused by both decades of racism and income level housing/schools is why people of the same race will live in the same neighborhood. So a low-income black resident is not going to commit crimes against someone who lives an hour away. They’re going to fulfill their needs within the neighborhood they have access to, which often leads to violence. Simply saying “black people kill black people” completely misses the point.

The problem with this phrase is that it gets used to put blame on black people for a problem that is not black-specific, and usually to distract from actual race-based issues such as police brutality

“Racist black on black crime is a myth” is a far better and more accurate way to say it because it prevents people from using it as a tool to divert away from the Topic of racism while also understanding that intra-racial crime is a real thing because of the prevalence of Uniracial communities

The reason crimes are even committed is because of either a lack of physical or mental needs being met and they must be solved through a reconstruction of how every person treats the one next to them

I feel you but it still lets the myth of black people (specifically/preferably/whatever) seeking to commit crimes against black people go on

I think people of all races can seek to commit crime against their own race

But race isn’t a motivator in it in a vast majority of cases (it’s weird because there IS crime like that but it’s not really relevant in the discussion)

facts and its so annoying seeing the term get tossed around to invalidate social justice issues

  • Sep 29, 2021

    Fully agree with you OP

“Black on black crime” or any of minority is made up by white people who want to blame those darn black people or those darn Mexicans for killing themselves!!

  • Sep 29, 2021

Only youtube people think about black on black crime being worse than police brutality so theres your answer

The reason I feel like “black on black crime is a myth” still stands is because there has to be intent for it to be race specific. For example not every crime between two races where 1 is white is a hate crime. If black on black crime is real, being black has to be intentionally factored in. Otherwise, again, it’s just a surface level understanding

I see where your coming from but saying it like that has the same effect on people as “defund the police”

There’s far more reasons and consequences behind these situations than what can be contained in a single slogan that people will simply not grasp

Crazy to see white people throw around that bullshit "13%" statistic without realizing that crime is a direct result of economic disparity and that economic disparity in the black community is caused by whites

White people live in the higher class neighborhoods

Black people live in lower class neighborhoods

Crime is caused by economic disparity

Therefore... blacks must be more violent by nature

Racist ideaology cracks me up man the mental gymnastics these niggas do to justify their bullshit views
