It is dumb, but apparently many non-African Americans think that black = AA.

A lot of continental Africans don't view themselves through the racial lens that Americans do. They'll say their African/which country they're from before they're black. It's not wrong especially since you take into consideration the roots of our racial ideas and the reality of Africa/African nations and their relationships vs the fantasy.

That’s mostly out of an attempt to disassociate themselves from African Americans. In Sub Saharan Africa itself, while ethnic groups are more relevant than skin color, there’s much less debate about whether they are considered black or not, almost all of them are

Some might be trying to distance themselves for sure, you also have to recognize that the way people are educated to categorize themselves via race in America just isn't the same in continental Africa.

Yeah, because saying “we’re black” in Africa is as pointless as saying “we’re asian” in China. In most of these countries there isn’t a significant foreign population, and they’re all grouped together as foreigners in general. Africans in America have landscape full of different ethnic groups and have seen the “black” label taken by African American descendants of slavery. African immigrants (especially older ones) do not want to be associated with them, so they don’t call themselves black as a result. Africans would call themselves black in Africa if they were asked, but there’s not much to ask because being black isn’t a unique or defining characteristic there
Comments in these tweets disgusted me
Only my black people would feel the need to fight each other over some s*** like this when we was just tryna uplift each other

They don't call themselves black because they haven't been educated to call themselves black because within their countries they haven't been educated to perceive themselves through the framework of race that exists in America. The American racial framework/way of viewing self isn't standard everywhere else lol. Africans living in the continent of Africa call themselves African the same way people living in the continent of Asia would call themselves Asian lol
Them getting offended at the tweet is mad but what you're seeing is the disconnect in perception we're discussing lol

In general, yeah. But the concept of blackness still exists in the context of colonial relations, especially in places like South Africa and Zimbabwe

It exists but if you look at those twitter replies it's mostly South African's who aren't happy with the black label. There's also been movement and violence towards Nigerians in South Africa, it's more unifying in America and among the diaspora than it is in some continental nations. What you're saying about the the concept existing in places is right though

I think what also made the tweet more polarizing is that three of the examples they listed were Americans, leading the South Africans to think that they were trying to associate the Miss Universe winner with the other American women
