Hynes emphasized that despite his litany of art and noise references, the most crucially important part of the show “has to be that it’s enjoyable” for the people who flew in with their families, who saved their money up for one show this year, who will cherish the memory forever. “None of those things are lost on me because I am from that, growing up in Essex, taking the train into the city to see this one show,” Hynes said. “I am that person.” And the CDs—capturing, on this night, the raw sparkle and tidal grooves of new songs like “Wish” and older favorites such as “You’re Not Good Enough,” a fan lucidly proclaiming “sick” just as “Best to You” began, and, of course, piercing screams—excite him just as much as them. “I love the idea, especially in this time period, of leaving with the thing you saw that night, that really won’t exist again,” Hynes said. “Even for me, it feels cool to have these artifacts—now I have a real physical memory of these nights. How many opportunities do you get to play Madison Square Garden 15 times?”
