bobby brown rivaling MJ isnt a new take
he was a superstar as well, touring the world and all
in hindsight , we only see MJ illustrious career and a bobby brown peak that fell off (for various reasons) so thinking MJ had competition sounds ridiculous

In reality,MJ had competition in the eyes of the public when he was alive, ask the people who lived it
Thing is MJ outlasted/outperformed all of them lol

You’re not wrong lol. Bad was considered a commercial disappointment when it released. It spawned 5 number one hits, but they weren’t the biggest hits of the year - George Michael had bigger hits during that same time. It also wasn’t the best selling album of those years, getting passed by Whitney Houston, AC/DC, Guns N Roses.

What MJ had though was longevity. Thriller was the biggest album ever, and he was able to consistently drop big event albums (even if they weren’t the absolute biggest albums out) for 2 more decades.
