Following his breakout success with the Lakeith Stanfield-led satire Sorry to Bother You, Boots Riley is coming back with a new coming-of-age comedy series I’m a Virgo led by Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), which has just been acquired by Amazon Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Created, written and directed by Riley in its entirety, the coming-of-age tale centers on a 13-foot-tall Black man (Jerome) living in Oakland, California, with the tone of the 13-episode series once again featuring an absurdist comedic tone akin to Riley’s feature directorial debut.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Amazon on this project,” Riley said. “This show will either have me lauded or banned, and as such, I have demanded payment up front.”

sounds interesting and I'm in for whatever Riley does because Sorry to Bother You was a great debut and the world needs more absurdist comedy

Didn’t realize Sorry to bother you was his first flick?

That’s the beauty about films, you can be damn near 50 putting out ya first film and proceed to having a promising career. It’s not a “young mans game” like music

  • 13 foot nigga cant wait

  • Sorry to bother you was so funny

Lmao sounds wild. I actually hated Sorry To Bother You when I first saw it in theaters. The genius of it really didn’t hit me until earlier this year

Boots Riley was half of the underground rap duo The Coup in the late 90s early 2000s. they had two albums that were well received, especially on the west coast. he directed one or two music videos too

but yea, it's pretty cool and inspiring how he pivoted to movies at an older age and is now seeing this success. never too late!

Kind of crazy that all of these studios would work with Boots considering he’s literally an out and out communist.

You’d think conservatives would feel some kind of way about it, but I guess he’s a little too under the radar.

Also, The Coup is pathetically underappreciated.

The executives know who they’re working with. With Annapurna & Megan Ellison, I doubt their politics are far off. With Amazon, they’re tryin to get this $.

I feel Riley’s expression of his views does not obstruct his work too much different than McKay, S Penn, or Michael Moore

Film executives still carry a lot of the same liberal ideals as filmmakers. Although generally more conservative

Always good to have a big wig like Michael Ellenberg backing this project.

Cant wait, Mike Epps is doing incredible work right now too

I’m anxiously waiting to know if Jermone’s character hoops or not lol

    Potential for some hilarious scenes
