I mean he's not going to come out and say "I'm the black messiah! Bow!!". You know what's up when you say s*** like buy my debut album or let hip-hop die, 2Pac visited me in a dream and said "you the..." and those Mortal Man lyrics I quoted earlier about how he's trying to be like Nelson Mandela and free people from their mental slavery

We can agree that J Cole, Drake, Travis Scott, Future, Tyler are on a similar level of fame/popularity. Why is it that Kendrick is the only one with this mantle? Even J Cole, who makes similar music, addressing similar topics does not have to deal with this perception

Hiiipower literally has bars about him being assassinated like some of the black revolutionaries were. This song alone mentions MLK, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Fred Hampton, Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and 2pac. He invited the comparisons, what else do you expect

I get you but man.... the people you're listing were either some of the most important civil rights activists of the 20th century or active, high-ranking BPP members. Kendrick is neither of those things.

It's not his fault if he simply mentions these people and listeners automatically equate him with them in their minds

I'll concede that the Nelson bars on MM betray a bit of self-aggrandisement on his part.
But someone itt already mentioned how Mortal Man ends with him saying maybe he's just another normal person.
If someone wants to half-listen to his music and not take away a more holistic message that's on them

  • May 6, 2024

    "The audience not dumb
Shape the stories how you want, hey, Drake, they’re not slow"

Gotta disagree with Kendrick on this one

I’m really tryna find these listeners lol never met or seen someone who genuinely believes Kendrick is a political revolutionary like those mentioned. He just raps about it, that’s his job and views of the world.

It’s about the music, the message. If someone is expecting Kendrick to run for president or solve the worlds problems that’s a wild expectation even with the lyrics.

You turning it into something different. Nobody expects Kendrick to run for a political position. We're talking about what he was addressing on Mr Morale, the "savior" thing

  • May 6, 2024

I think my biggest frustration with the sexual assault angle is the (mostly) uncritical support of Kendrick.

I am the furthest thing from a Drake fan, but it was clear s*** was getting corny when there’s just not enough talk about the fact that Kendrick had a s***offender on his album and took him on tour. And the only rebuttals I’ve seen are “he said he was a hypocrite on Mr Morale so its okay”

this s*** really ended with a whimper

  • iHype

Drake nor Kendrick not out here killing people so. But yes in general we allow a lot of toxicity but this is something else and the fact it’s being hyped and normalized is just absurd.

Like ppl keep talking about this is history but keeping it real not in a good way. Ppl gonna look back on this in a dark way and both will end up regretting how low they went

    Kendrick has literally murdered people

"And I want everybody to view my autopsy
So you can see exactly where the government had shot me
No conspiracy my fate is inevitable
They play musical chairs once I'm on that pedestal"

Idk, it goes beyond simple mentioning imo. Imo nobody, including him, can be puzzled that people had this perception of him. Ask yourself why of all the successful rappers we've seen lately, Kendrick is the only one who's had this messianistic narrative surrounding him?

That’s exactly what I’m talking about wym? If he’s telling people what he thinks, but also tells them he’s just like us, what would cause someone to think of him as their savior (which is more religious than political but not the topic).

Rappers make allegories and comparisons all the time. People just enjoy the content bruh raps about, there may be some weirdos out there but him rapping about the legacy of others and evoking people to think about what he’s saying in that light isn’t a bad thing

And there's no respect being shown to the mothers or the children.

This is hip hop and this battle is f***in amazing. It woke up both of their pens and Drake's been sleeping at the wheel for years in favor of making hits until now. But it is now at a point where it is past ugly.

The only way for either one of them to come out on top of this is to keep going lower than low. I just hope they keep this s*** on wax and don't take it any further than that.

Exactly. People are acting as if we can perceive the conflict in absolutes. Nuance exists. Two things are correct: this was excellent for hip hop, and both rappers, especially Kendrick, were amazing; also, it's a display of immorality to the utmost degree. Yes, I recognize that rap beef lack morals, but this is clearly different. Even legends like Cube warned that going below the belt and discussing a man's family/upbringing can make the situation a whole lot worse. We're fortunate to have this on a mainstream level for both entertainment and the promise that nothing will happen to Drake or Kendrick, because this s*** happens in drills and always ends with someone dying.

This isn’t a “white” way of viewing this, it’s having some basic f***in understanding of how the world works. Plenty of black people I have spoke to irl and online have said similar things.

If this was something I was choosing sides on then surely it would’ve made more sense to make this thread prior to The Heart and I could’ve framed it as only Kendrick making light of sexual assault?

    Overall

this started with bad intentions, I don’t understand how we were frothing with foam in mouth for this battle, and now seems like it went too far

Perhaps if the outcome was different the story would change but

    That’s why I f***ed your b**** you fat motherfucker

This is hip hop, this is the coliseum.

This beef is reeking with homophobia, transphobia, sexual assault jokes... If your message was genuine you would highlight all of these things (especially when on the issue of transphobia Drake is the only culprit).

Instead you're weaponizing a very legit thing to appear as the "huh y'all see they're both bad" when we all know that not only this message wouldn't have existed if Drake was winning but also that rap beefs are filled with these kind of low blows (and we all know better than to set these dudes as some kind of standards so there's really nothing to be disappointed about )
