Yoooo people really need to know how crazy lyrical this verse is though. The lyricism in general is awesome but the chess wordplay throughout the whole verse is immaculate. We need to break this down!

Basically this whole verse is a game of chess Drizzy is playing with this girl.

Put you inside a G-Class, that's just a starter kit"

1) "Put you inside a G-Class" = Getting her a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

2) But it also means Class G chess rating which is at a novice level.

1) This is the first thing he will do to win her over.

2) This is his opening move to get a win over her in this game of chess.

1) He got a new chain.

2) The girl is a new chess piece for him to control.

3) Chest/Chess Homophone.

• The girl loves playing games and calculating moves as if she is a chess prodigy like the character Beth Harmon for the show Queen's Gambit but this ties back to lines before this and after where Drake puts her in her places and makes her look like a novice.

• In the Purple Rain film, Prince was pretty toxic and manipulative to woman who tried playing him. He basically saying he going to do this girl who trying to play games with him dirty even though he is usually looked at as a nice guy type like Prince Charming which is a character in stories who is usually a classy, wealthy fellow who saves damsels in distress.

• Which would be a good chess move that he beats.

2) Papi/Poppy Homophone double entendre. The Poppy is official symbol of remembrance in Canada, UK, and some other places. Alluding to him winning this chess game.

• Which is probably another reason he got her into a very prestige apartment building so she can model her s***. This is a chess moves man.... another win. Very calculating.

1) Putting someone in check in a general sense is to control them.

2) Putting someone in "Check" in Chess is to put the King in danger of checkmate if they don't move it. He made the roommate move when he moved the girl to another apartment so he put both of them in check.

3) He also saying she hates it that he checks on her ex-roomate. Basically meaning she hates that he is visiting her and s***.

4) ALSO saying she hates it when Drake plays a calculating game like checkers let alone when he ups the game by playing chess.

1) A for effort is something teachers would give students on their test if they got something wrong but admired their attempt. Sometimes they would do E for effort though because Effort starts with E obviously. Basically saying even if she didn't like what he is doing she has to admire his moves.

2) E4 is a common opening move in chess. Basically saying he'll always have the first move in the games they play. Also referencing his opening move of putting her in the apartment at the start of the verse.

• As he once said "This is real life niggas think I'm playing chess". Even though this whole verse had chess wordplay ironically he declares he isn't into playing a back and forth game with her.

• Only time he'd play that is if he was playing Back and Forth song by Aaliyah a very iconic artist that we all know has influenced Drake.

• This was basically a real life war to him where as she only playing chess. A game.

• This is also effectively ending the chess game/scheme in the verse.

the biggest is g-class. there is zero chance drake knows what chess classes are, let alone the difference between fide titles outside of master or grandmaster

I don't see how that's such an improbable thing for him to know. Even if he didn't know before he wrote the verse. Is it really that improbable he would google information about chess to make sure the wordplay is good? Plus it just plays to well into the theme of the verse imo.
