I personally think he dumbed it down lyrically. Just compare "Too Fast" and "Poison" to his new s***
He def did. Jackie Brown is a nursery rhyme fr, but it’s still hitting for me

a bit before the album dropped, @OnThinIce said Brent's singing skills improved, and they were NOT capping. he was never a bad or mediocre singer (imo) but his vocals improved noticeably on this project. I actually really enjoyed the skits, I loved his take on the whole toxic narrative that has been surrounding him since he started becoming more mainstream.
I personally think the way he approached it was clever; giving into the toxic theme in the skits and then having the "wake up call" at the end was a cool way of saying "that toxic shxt is not cool or what I'm trying to portray." after a while tho I couldn't be bothered to listen to the skits everytime so I removed them, and I honestly started to enjoy the album as a whole a little less.
I realized that the way he finally addressed the whole toxic thing played a large part in my enjoyment/appreciation for the album. I still like the album, it just hit a little less hard when the main sense of concept was removed, because the songs don't follow the skits that closely, if they do at all.
I never understood why people would say "Brent is way better with Sonder," or "Brent's old music is different/better" until I went back to my 4 hour long Brent playlist after I was done listening to wasteland solo. not to sound generic but it made me realize how much substance and subject matter was missing from Wasteland. there really is a stark difference between brent's previous work and I just can't unhear it now. the production AND lyrics on Sonder's work goes insane. you can just tell he was in a different space in a lot of his songs from Sonder Son and his other projects in general. I still love Wasteland but I just appreciate his older works so much more now. I hope that at some point in the future he mixes his new style and old style.
fav songs:
loose change (#2 for me), role model, heal your heart interlude (#1 for me), rolling stone, fytb, bad luck (love the vibes and classic R&B feel on this one)
TLDR: Pretty good album, loved it a lot the first week or two, after that it just made me appreciate and miss Brent's older style of music more. Right now, I still come back to this project more than his other projects tho, otherwise I'm just listening to my giant Brent playlist

Jackie brown been the one since he dropped this
damn this came and went
Album needed more life to it
Not dance songs but something less lethargic
Maybe some 2 step garage influence
That sounds fire
I guess Brent’s “retort” to his music being labelled as toxic is doubling down on the whole idea and allowing it to lead to its natural conclusion
Where does he go from here?
modern Craig David
!https://youtu.be/u5mEszYqjmsAhh for some reason I confused two-step with Garage, I was picturing Brent on this type of sound pallet;
But this all sounds like Sonder-esque material lol
damn this came and went
Honestly the album has a lot of cool songs that I think ought 2 age well
(Loose Change, Jackie Brown, Price of Fame, Rolling Stone... etc)
I liked all the new joints on this a lot but ig they were too subdued for most ppl
Songwriting isnt very personal either but honestly i didnt rlly care

woah peter that’s a whole lot of text there
Fell in love with “Bad Luck” few days ago. Didn’t catch me when I listened to it when it dropped but now I love it
Surprised this didn’t hit for a lot of you. I wasn’t even a big fan of Brent but the highlights on this are some of my favourite tracks this year.
The album definitely should’ve been trimmed but tracks like Rolling Stone, Loose Change, Dead Man Walking & Jackie Brown are really good.

i think a lot of artists have the problem of making a "concept album" but not really buying in 100% because they're afraid or don't want to make essentially a play with 808s (either bc of fan reception or bc they don't like how that sounds) so then they end up with a middle thing where the album isn't cohesive enough bc the concept is loose/not tied in but could be purely musically better if the concept was suspended
i think we've talked about this but sonder son and wasteland from a writing perspective are sooo f***ing different its nuts
also sort of feel like "im toxic.. but wait its bad!" is a little cop out ish like a way to make 10 toxic songs but then be like im not embracing it tho! at the end even tho uk the toxic aesthetic will sell
