I'm from a place with really funny accents (Newfoundland) and even though I have an american/canadian one, I kind wish I had the accent from home. It's a part of who you are! Just take the jokes in good faith and be yourself. The type of person who would laugh at you in public, is so judgemental they would laugh at you about anything outside of their narrow minded world.
