The chorus on this new Navy Blue track is depressing. I love hearing Ka's voice on something new to my ears, but a lot of the stuff he was writing toward the end is really grim. I think The Thief Next To Jesus has a lot of his best writing on it, but it's his darkest work in my opinion. Even in Ka's grittiest works before Thief, I always heard hope through the pain. Like he was working through it. I don't hear that much hope in Thief. His tone even sounds more down, and his vocals even more hushed. I feel the same about this song Circa as well. It's a mind blowing verse, a great song, and that beat is the most Ka sounding beat I ever heard made by someone who isn't Ka. I've listened to it dozens of times already, and I'm about to run it back again. I love it, but it's sad. The truth can be extremely ugly, but if there's any quality in Ka's music that draws me to it more than anything, it's the sincerity. Lay it on me, even in your darkest hour. Damn. RIP to the greatest.

One of Ka's favorite things about the pop-ups was seeing his listeners build with each other, and debating their favorite songs and albums. We're hoping to see that same energy at this year's event. Last year was the memorial, but going forward these annual gatherings are his birthday celebrations. Since Ka wanted everyone who appreciated his music to be in community with one another, these events are our gift to him. That's why we're so grateful to those joining us in person. Saturday's Grief Pedigree screening was great. I'm glad they did this at the SVA movie theater rather than inside the popup space. Nice atmosphere, spacious enough that everyone could sit comfortably, and seeing those classic videos projected onto a movie screen in a dark theater was a great experience, especially in a crowd of Ka fans. I only wish they did more events this time like they did last year (three nights in a row after the popup hours vs one night this year), but I'm sure these have to be somewhat draining both physically and emotionally for Mimi. She enjoys herself and appreciates her husbands' fans obviously, but that's a lot for her to give. I hope this tradition continues. It seems there are enough artists, friends, family members, and stories to keep this happening for years to come. Two things that caught my attention at the Q&A: Ka wrote a book, and he also wrote a comedy screenplay which Mahershala Ali claims is absolutely hilarious. Mimi mentioned she wants to see this script made into a film, and it's on her list of things to accomplish, but she didn't say much about the book. I'm very curious about both of these projects and hope to see them come to fruition.

Nothing else really struck me in this Q&A session compared to last year's events that I can recall. I feel like it was all covered pretty well last year, but of course we're comparing three nights of Q&A panels to just one, and being that this event was hosted at the SVA Theater rather than in the popup space, they were on a time budget and needed to get out before most folks had the opportunity to ask anything. Honestly, and I don't mean to sound disrespectful because I do respect Mahershala Ali and he seemed sincere in everything he was asking Mimi, but he was really long winded and ate up a lot of time. Once he was done and they got to the audience, I think maybe there was only time for three or four questions. I'm really interested in this book though and wish they had time to go into that a bit. No idea if it's autobiographical, fiction, or something completely different. Could be a book about stamp collecting for all I know. Ka is hands down and by far my favorite lyricist ever, and I really would be interested to see what his writing style is like on paper rather than over a beat. I can only imagine how visual and poetic it is and really hope it sees the light of day eventually. He didn't halfass anything when it came to words.

Roc definitely should get into standup or comedic acting. Dude is effortlessly hilarious. A live table read would be incredible.
