I might be missing out on something, but I don't see why it's so bad that they do that? The effect of it is that more artists can be highlighted. It's not something that diminishes their chances of winning an award. Seems like they feel they are too good to be compared to others competing for that Award...

Going by their logic we could also scrap genre-specific awards and just let them all compete for album of the year, song of the year and artist of the year ....
