that’s because the first season was mainly just monster of the week type and their production values werent s***
Buffy had that 90s TV formula where it got better over time and took til midway through season two to become great. watching those early episodes reminds me of watching the early episodes of Seinfeld where it’s kinda mid bc they hadn’t found that groove yet
but watch the last couple eps of season 1 and then start season 2. if you’re still not f***ing with it, then yeah it’s not for you lol
Spike coming in changes the game in s2 e3, from there on its top tier TV (some crap filler episodes such as the fish monster one) until season 6 (love s6 just a drop in quality imo)
Angel was better but I did enjoy Buffy
angel falls off a cliff in s4 for me tbh

I can understand why you’d feel that way the whole Connor arc was fkin annoying

the absolute worst

I think Buffy is prob better consistently but Angel is more enjoyable at its peaks.
I tried about 7 episodes but didn't really fw it like that
watch True Blood instead, u’d like it

and they did my baby Cordelia so dirty with that trash ass demonic pregnancy plot

we agree completely. the show’s peak is s2 through s5

Yeah idk wtf that even was. There were things to like, like Doyle in S1 and Lorne who were both great. Doyle’s exit in S1 was really well done.
watch True Blood instead, u’d like it
Got the whole thing downloaded too
Starting for the first time from the start
Remember as a kid watching the late run but I don’t remember much of it
So we’re here from the top

Excited for you
Never seen it
Worth a watch if I don’t have nostalgia for it besides seeing commercials for it growing up??
I only learned of this show through uni friends and watched it over the past 2 years and now it's an all-time fave for me. the character development from start to finish is crazy, never rly had a show which made me reflect on my own behaviour and relationships so much tbh.
I came for the campy slightly subversive genre fun where they regularly manage to give tropes a fresh twist but then stayed for how they moved along main story and character relationships and arcs through this monster of the week format and how funny the dialogue is, it legit became such an amazing comfort entertainment that I'm a bit sad it's over. prolly gonna start Angel again now tho S1 didn't sell me that much.
because Buffy is episodic it's a bit hit or miss, but that also means that you'll suddenly have a peak episode after filler, but the filler is rare and usually still very good with a lot of snappy dialogue. there are some real low points but over all seasons I'd say it's only a very small handful of episodes during which I wasn't still invested, the standard is extremely high for this type of show. season 6 is probably the last with peak level episodes to me, but they still wrapped it all up very satisfyingly with the last season.

Might have to put this on the list now

highly recommend it fam 🙏🏻 Whedon is a crazy good writer and showrunner, always such a good balance of episode/season plots and so good at using fantastical scenarios to make u reflect on moral problems.
if you're into sci-fi as well, Firefly by him does all this brilliantly too and gives u a good idea of his humor and writing style, it's only 1 season and a movie so a bit less commitment than 7 longer seasons
the thing I maybe respect most about Buffy tho is how they kept developing the characters from season to season and the lore just has a lot of (metaphorical) depth, you'd never guess from S1 how twisted and complex it gets later on (it really sucks Firefly never got the chance to do this after getting cancelled..)

Thanks for such a detailed response and reminding me to watch Firefly too
p much binging Angel atm, it's cool to have more buffyverse. def w its own charme and style. it sometimes feels more inconsistent and directionless tbh, but at its best it's just as good as buffy and I also dig the darker tone/ more blurry approach to good+bad (fitting w the main character ofc)
S1 takes a while to find its groove tbh, it's good tho, S2 is pretty great, S3 still cool but S4 was kind of a trainwreck ngl (that said Fred is maybe my fav character so far). still have S5 left. everyone says it's great so pretty hype
