under obama, the DNC and GOP had a very weird but direct realignment in many ways that shaped post-obama politics near completely

people now (especially online) really have no idea what the DNC was seen as prior to obama or why the political environment allowed obama to succeed so well at the time. the campaign platforms of democrats in the 90s or the bush challengers of the 00s are completely alien to the current party. when you go back now and read what they actually sound like, its hard to tell its the same party.

obama's transformative presence really reshifted politics primarily to social issues and not really just that, but contentious ones. while obama will always be remembered as both a warmonger and for expanding the security state, these things aren't out of line with past presidents before him - what is highly distinct is how much his administration internalized making contentious social issues the basis of his outreach and accomplishment.
