Not Celine Dion and Harry Potter
Swae Lee track is honestly the only song so far that's restored the feeling of Vol 1, absolutely love that guitar solo
not everything needs a sequel
granted the first one had volume 1 in the title so it was only bound
but for christ sake
Been listening throughout the day and I don’t think this is a bad album, it’s just a stark contrast to what the first one is.
Vol. 1 was a lot more energetic and radio friendly and sounded like Calvin & Co. were trying to create big hits with the funk sound.
Vol. 2 is lot more laid back and tonally consistent from track to track, and there seems to be a focus placed more on the instrumentation rather than the vocal artists, whereas on Vol. 1 it was the opposite.
So I think if you were going into this expecting the exact same approach he took with Vol. 1 (mostly everyone was expecting that honestly), then I can see how Vol. 2 is a big letdown.
But just taking in Vol. 2 for what it is, I think it’s still a pretty smooth and enjoyable listen
Listened on a road trip today and honestly I’m putting it around the same level as Vol 1: high highs and a lot of mid scattered throughout lol
On the good side, Obsessed is fire (Charlie sounds f***ing great although at this point just get 6lack lmao) and all of the singles have grown on me quite a bit. I also dig Nothing More To Say and Somebody Else and Lean On Me as laid back summer jams. Overall the production is crazy and Calvin is in his bag instrumentally.
On the bad, Ready Or Not and Live My Best Life are f***ing garbage (absolute waste of a Latto feature) and Day Ones is also pretty f***ing bad as a closer. I realized writing this that I completely forgot everything about Woman of the Year which feels like a fair enough review in itself. Same deal as Vol 1 in that some of these songs have completely baffling choices for guest placements and arrangements. Nothing More To Say lost a full point or more from that outro being so out of place and both Snoop and Busta fumbled their tracks especially when it came to hook duties.
Overall, I like it for what it is, but I wish he would’ve taken some time and polished this or even just left it as singles tbh
Its just not it. Instrumentals are nice but people on it just dont work...
Ready Or Not is a prime example of this
This is fine but nothing special. Too much of it sounds the same and only a few tracks are up to the standard of the last album. It's enjoyable background music but that's it.
Album sucks
Stop asking for sequels
He did call the first one “Vol. 1” in all fairness

you are wrong about day one being a bad closer, my dude.
pharrell x pusha x calvin made a banger to take a flight to miami
I fw New to You
ppl gotta stop making vol. 1 out to be some untouchable classic, it has some great songs but it’s not like vol. 2 is way worse
Album is not bad. It's more rounded out and just decent music all around. I don't think I hated any song when listening to this album
It's the equivalent of The Incredibles going to Incredibles 2 if that makes sense lol.
