  • I think this is relevant considering the biden situation. I mean there has to be a good reason to put biden up for nomination right?

Probably just because they usually win. If incumbents didn’t have such a historical advantage they’d probably dump Biden immediately

In theory, surely a party would want to run a candidate who they know has already won. They don’t need to introduce people to a new candidate, they’ve already been tried and tested, they already have a cohesive and recognisable name. People who don’t follow politics and just show up to vote probably also just tend to stick with what they know.

I do think this election kinda negates this rule though because 1. They’re effectively both incumbents and 2. Biden is such a terrible candidate and may have lost all his ‘incumbent advantage’ capital

Incumbents usually win reelection and in many cases have a good amount of momentum going for them. They have an established administration, goals to build off of, and are well known to the country already. Also promotes stability and a unified party vision

Incumbents with a decent primary challenger usually lose general elections. I’d say this scenario with Biden is more unprecedented than Carter, LBJs or Bush Srs scenarios tho cus they had actual notable challengers for the entire primary period

Where the DNC f***ed up was coming out a year ago to make it clear primaries wouldn’t be fair, there’d be no debates and Biden would for sure be the nominee. They said this in advance so no one could properly challenge him, so now they have no basis for fielding alternatives. Most average people knew how concerning Biden has been for years now

word i appreciate you posting this, now that i think about it the democrat party put so much support behind biden they probably never considered an alternative, which means its basically too late to pick someone else
