Feb 9, 2020my problem is people only thinking in terms of popular music and citing kanye’s work as an influence (which it undoubtably is) and his influence alone, he brings ideas to the mainstream but he doesn’t create all those ideas himself. just destroy the idea of the single great artist esp when the creation of said art is so communal imo

These Ye stans have a selective memory when it comes down to rap music (most of them aren't really rap fans). One nigga made a comment to me a while back talking how revolutionary Kanye was by rapping over sped up soul samples on CD and a few joints off LR, RZA was doing the sped up soul samples (and vastly superior to anything Kanye's made) before Kanye was making beats for Jay and RocaFella.
You don't have to be the first person to do something to influence others though
It's easy to see how someone like Cole would hear early Kanye or Travis late Kanye and decide they want to incorporate some of that in their own music, why is that so hard to understand lol
