Would love to see how malicious or normal they really are in layman's terms
And maybe other interesting info that the contracts contain

From my friend who read through every single contract and is in the music business.
“Basically he signed a pretty bad deal with rockafella right when he released college dropout. And they’re owned by def jam/universal. It was for 7 albums, which is a lot and his royalty % was pretty low. But he got some huge advances. Then when we was getting towards album 5 or so, they renegotiated it. Prob bc he was huge at that point. He got a bunch more in advances and he gets ownership of albums 6 and 7 masters 20 years after release of album 7. Then after album 7 they started GOOD, which was a joint venture between GOOD and universal, but Kanye will own all his masters from album 8 onward. I guess he just really wants to own the masters for the first 5 albums, which makes sense, but that’s not how the contract works. Literally the same thing that happened to swift. Also universal fronted him soooo much money for his recording budgets, plus random GOOD music projects and film things that never came out, so he just dug himself a huge hole”
Also Cruel Summer movie and “Yeezus Lost Tapes” are mentioned in the contract.

Thanks for that breakdown. Sounds like he owns the masters to Ye and JIK then.. and maybe those 7 tracks albums depending on what the deal was with the other artists.
Ye should just drop 1 or 2 albums that he focuses on and bank!

I love you bro
I love you bro
of course my man. he also went on to say this..
"Yeah, most major labels will make you agree to give them masters. Their perspective is that they sink so much money into each artist and take the most risks, so they should get it. On the country side ((my friend works primarily in country music)), a label will probably spend 500k to 1M on an artist before they even release an album (marketing, recording, etc). So I’m sure on the pop/rap side it’s way higher. But then again they make so much when an artist does well.
Kanye’s royalty on the first few albums was around 15%, so for ever album sold, costs are deducted then Universal takes 85 and Kanye gets 15. Nowadays there are a lot more independent labels that let you own your masters, but they don’t have the same kind of marketing/financial resources.
Also Kanye got a 12m advance to make yeezus, which is an insane amount. But it’s an advance so he has to pay that money back from the royalties he makes."

He also spent a few million recording in Wyoming before he bought property if I remember correctly. It was some fancy ass resort that he rented for months at a time

both of them punching azalea banks in between recording sessions to relieve stress
So basically if I understand correctly Kanye's contract is OK, but he became so big that he decided to bully these people into giving him masters for the first albums.
I think label takes a risk pouring money into artist, but if the artist becomes really big, then the label looks like an a******.
Anyway, we know about Desiigner and Mr Hudson, and I'm sure there are other people who were signed to Kanye but weren't really "free".

Kanye doesn’t handle any of that, will still be Universal/Def Jam

Ok, I didn't know that, even CyHi had this joke song about how does it feel to be signed to Kanye in real life

Yeah I’m sure ye gave him that idea, also produced the beat.
He still founded the label but he doesn’t have control over contracts etc, just finding the artists.
Serious question: Why is Kanye owning his masters important? Does he make more money?

Yes, as I understand it means that he gets money each time song is played, performed, the album is bought etc.

Damn so he really makes nothing off of an album sale?

He makes some % from it I think while he is under the contract, but ultimately they control these songs, I think if he goes away from them they can even prohibit him from performing these songs, or they can let some talentless artist sample Ye even if Ye himself is against it.
Recently No ID sold his masters to some organisation for 20 million or more, and I think they bought it to get passive income from his songs.

So he has masters for his most recent few albums?
His value will take a short term hit but this WILL get done and Kim will represent Mr. West... if allowed... great s*** here

Kanye woke up and realized JIK and Ye suck compared to everything else. I’d be pissed too
