So how do you guys feel about sampling? I feel like it should be encouraged but I also feel like the artist should be creative with it. Or just slapping on something with a simple loop. You shouldn't be able to sue for as much as you can if you're the original creator though that's bs.

Buto. The other hand if you complain about sampling then just take the time out to make your own things from scratch it's not impossible.

    What do you think?

I’m all for it. I’ve noticed that anti sampling rhetoric is something usually done by older rock fans to s*** on hip hop

Absolute free reign to sample, as long as the effort is put in

no issues with sampling but there is a difference between what i consider an art of sampling and what is done mostly now by producers of just jacking loops and throwing drums under it

Sampling was a part of music before hip hop. Talking down on sampling is just arrogance from producers who don't sample or old rock and roll and classical fans looking for a way to demean hiphop

yeah I don't think people should be praised with just literally chopping the loop and pasting it to the beat

  • Sample clearance shouldn’t have upfront fees

Publishing etc makes sense but it’s dumb that artists have to pay thousands up front to clear

Luckily interpolations are a lot more chill but u gotta sacrifice the integrity of the original sound recording sometimes

sampling is audio collage and suing over a sample is stupid. if the original artist wants some form of credit they should have a conversation directly with the artist who sampled them & sort it out

  • Sep 8, 2020

Sampling is hip hop in its purest form and one of the reasons why it’s the best genre, bc the sound sometimes doesn’t really even have a genre bc u can pull a sample/loop from anything and make it hip hop.

And using loops is just collaboration, sure u can argue that it takes the charm out of the art of sampling, but why should I be trying to charm another nigga? I’m not gay

One of my former favorite artists blocked a song I produced from dropping bc I sampled him, and when I get to LA for the first time I’m going to jump him

  • I love sampling. Capitalism does not.

Yup it’s not just a thing with hip hop. People have platinum records they feed their families off of for covers they did

also I think theres a difference between sampling extremely popular songs and actually looking for something more obscure. Def respect the latter more.

Sampling IS hip hop. Been listening to "Burden" by Amine, as a recent example of how great sampling can be.
