This might even have more replay value for me than his sole album that every hiphop head considers a classic (Rip The Jacker)
People always say his production was trash but I just don’t agree. Sure one could argue Wyclef Jean’s more laid back production doesn’t mesh with Canibus’ lyrical content but I feel like they contrast each other nicely, and it isn’t overproduced so you get to focus on the content
The album has the LL Cool J diss with the iconic Mike Tyson cameo, it has Niggonometry which has one of the most iconic sample flips of 90s hiphop, it has weird out there concepts like I Honor You where he raps from the POV of him being a sperm cell talking to his mother, which sounds absolutely goofy but this mf makes it work
For the people that actually know this album, why do you think this album isn’t respected more? Is it just the fact that his hype in the 90s after the freestyles and features was way too high? I love this album so much I just don’t understand how people never started to rediscover this album retrospectively like a lot of other projects
2000 BC f***ing murders Can-I-Bus
This thread isn’t to compare the albums in his discog, I’m trying to discuss this album in its own vacuum tbh
I always just liked the vibes of Can-I-Bus so much. I can appreciate how he got even more conceptual and technical with his rhymes but that doesn’t take away any of my appreciation for this debut
Just feel like the ciritique it always got is very much blown out of proportion. And I’m trying to understand why
But on the real I shoulda posted this on The Coli, there’s no way current KTT got multiple people besides me still bumping Canibus
The Coli

I like some of the tracks on there but a lot of that production varoes generic to basura and his hooks were never that good.
Bars are great of course but he should’ve had someone that wasn’t Wyclef producing that.
Get ed, Second Round KO, How We Roll, and Buckingham Palace are the highlights imo
Also he needed more battle tracks, that’s what everybody loved him for. Like if 2000 BC was the debut album instead then his career trajectory would’ve been a lot better

See i liked how it wasn’t that, especially in hindsight with the knowledge that he would eventually drop projects like that
So I’m thinking, is the hate mostly coming from people who were alive and old enough at the time to anticipate his debut? And the mediocre reception just stuck around?
Would the album be remembered more fondly if people these days actually took their time to revisit it? As someone who got into Canibus later I’d think so
