It’s just a different methodology and way of working than producers are used to now.

Producers like 9th wonder and Jake one are the best episodes of the show because they’ve been listening through records for samples and flipping them for like 30 years. Doesnt make the older guys better producers inherently but their way of working is way more suited record store sample flips

The new guys just work different. They sample but with premade loops by people like Frank Dukes, Cubeatz, Allen Ritter, people off Splice.com to drag and drop into the software. You don’t have to listen through a record for something to loop because a producer/musician has made a loop for you that’s ready to go. Listening through records to find something to flip is a huge skill in itself. And sometimes they’re just bad record choices.

But yeah working this kind of straight off the record sampling into newer production styles is pretty tough, and the producers aren’t great at being able to do it, because they don’t have to be great at it anymore
