In the opening interview scene she talks about how the most important part of conducting for her is controlling when the orchestra starts playing and time in general, in the closing scene at the Asian cosplay orchestra she's given a pair of headphones before the performance begins that I'm guessing has a metronome playing so she can conduct to the beat of the video playing behind them basically losing the thing about being a conductor she loves most
I feel like this movie had a weird relationship to race/identity politics (especially the lecture scene with the student speaking like a distressed twitter account; her final consignment to Asia is something I’m still mulling over) but, in general, it’s a***ysis of power was salient, feeling natural and incisive. Loooved the sound design and how the editing brought us into her mental space.
speaking of sound, for a movie ‘about’ or at least informed by music, it was frustrating how most of the ‘performances’ were immediately cut off! For how long it was, I wish we got 1-2 full musical sequences. All the talk of music, let us hear it please.
damnit they just stopped showing this at the theater thats walking distance from me. Still showing other places tho
i wanna see

To the second point, I think it was deliberate to do that. in the moments we do hear Tár at work, it is masterful and loud and engaging. I think it worked to show you in small moments “yeah… she’s THAT good.” But a big part of the movie was for you not to see that side of her that the world sees/ is familiar with. The movie doesn’t want you to admire nor despise her. It’s just showing you her authentically as a human being. The side of a larger than life artist that the public is blind to.
