And his albums are “overly polished” if you get what I mean. It’s like he’s trying to drop MBDTF with every release. An album that the critics and people all consider perfect, it’s like KDOT is afraid to release anything truly creative. He releases a lot of provocative and or shocking songs/albums so don’t get me wrong, he is pushing the boundaries just not sonically (i.e. his words and lyrics are strong but the music itself is just really good music but nothing experimental or new sounding. Schoolboy Q Oxymoron had some new ideas and sounds for comparison Rodeo had new ideas and sounds as well TPAB was as close as Kendrick got to a new sound since it had some songs that were like a modern GFunk but it didn’t have many songs like this)

And whoever said Kendrick is AOTY every time he drops, 😬 (Though I respect that you love Kendrick so much that’s awesome! I feel the same way about Radiohead and I wish I felt this way for Kendrick but I’m picky)

Kendrick had one AOTY in a year when there was hardly any notable music releases (2015). He has two AOTY if you count GKMC as a 2012 album but only one AOTY if you count GKMC as a 2013 album. Personally I don’t listen to TPAB anymore? It’s my favorite Kendrick album but I haven’t listened to any of it in years (I think I’ll listen to some today! First track is one of my favs). Rodeo on the other hand, we played a track from it yesterday and it’s still fresh. I’m not saying TPAB isn’t fresh anymore it probably is but I guess the replay value isn’t as high as other great albums for me.

As a second note on this, 2015 February when TPAB was released, everyone in the hip hop community had been waiting for a big release because there hadn’t been much since 2013 (GKMC, Yeezus, MMLP2, Born Sinners, Magna Carta, etc). Because of this I believe TPAB was rated higher than it deserved, not much higher but higher. People were hungry for some more hip hop and even in 2015 there wasn’t a lot still, we had to wait for 2016 for a lot of albums.

Final note, Kendrick is a great musician and lyricist/singer and makes great albums but they never really “hit it” for me like my favorite albums. I can’t exactly say why or what it is entirely. I understand he’s very personal and relatable in Mr. Morale but it doesn’t really feel relatable for me and comes off as forced to me it just feels like an album that was made for the times to “do well” and it has great songs arguably his best album since TPAB or GKMC but yeah just doesn’t really hit it for me and as such you won’t hear me replaying Mr Morale often. It sucks because I would love to love a Kendrick album as much as lots of people do but it’s just not the case and this is why albums like Illmatic still trump TPAB on polls/lists/rankings. It’s because Kendrick doesn’t appeal to a wide enough audience, but that’s okay because it allows his fan base to really LOVE him for what he is.

agreed I think Kendrick needs to loosen up a bit

Would love to see Kendrick release his “Kid A” / “808s and Heartbreak” / Yeezus / JiK*/Donda (though JiK to a lesser extent I’ll explain later) /

You get it I’m sure. Something super experimental. Something super unsafe as far as his fan base goes and the critics but something that ends up being considered a masterpiece by some/many.

EXPLAINING JiK here: Now I know, “wow you put JiK up there with 808s and Yeezus and Kid A?!”

Yes but it definitely has an asterisk for a reason! See, JiK is super experimental and it was not safe for Kanye. This is why I put it up there. I almost consider JiK and Donda to be like one large album in a sense as I feel Donda is essentially JiK redone in a way that is more palatable for people and JiK is in your face with the Christian gospel themes/lyrics. The reason I put JiK up there with the others is because it’s arguably as controversial as 808s and Kid A were when they were released if not more controversial because people have a hard-on for hating on Christian/Jesus themes in our current day and age. When ye released JiK it was super controversial and risky/etc and that’s what I’d like to see from Kendrick.

As a side note, JiK is really excellent music and great touching lyrics despite all the hate it “seems” to have online (remember online is the vocal minority. Most people don’t post comments on forums online). I’ve never seen any hate for it in real life (except one person). I’ve even bumped it in my car and as I was parking at the university a random student heard and asked me “Was that Jesus is King?” And I replied “Yes it was.” Which made him say “I love that album I’ve been listening to it nonstop. I love what Kanye is doing with the Christian themes and gospel”.
