Back then, you could sell 10,000 records that all receive 1 listen and chart higher than someone selling 5,000 records that each receive 500 listens

Streaming has added a LOT more accuracy in reflecting continuous demands for a song or record

never thought about it like this

The charts were OBJECTIVELY more corrupt in the past

Just goes to show when Thriller sold 1m copies a week for multiple weeks over a year after release what an absolute monster it was.

Nowadays it could be the same bot farm running up those numbers week after week, but back then it was 1mil different people going to the stores to buy the record

back then if someone liked you're single they'd have to buy it

now you can just stream the top spotify song while investing in crypto on the john

Back then if someone liked your single they’d have to buy it, if they didn’t like it they didn’t

Now we can see if someone likes your song a little, a LOT, or maybe a middle amount by how much they listened

    Charts mean more now

Not really because of how bullshit steaming rules are and how the system works s*** like Nicki Minaj and 69 will debut at #1 first week because of their fans spamming it

It’s also manipulated by bundles, 100 steaming versions and a whole host of other bullshit

These are all things that have existed before streaming. Streaming has still helped properly represent these things

Op right but people are gonna try and disprove these simple facts just out of spite. Having 5 million-10 million fans going out and buying your album as an actual product vs millions of people streaming your s*** through an inexpensive service will always be incomparable.

The charts were OBJECTIVELY more corrupt in the past

this is true prior to 1990 there is no official way to keep track of radio spins and physical copies

The charts has always been corrupt since it’s inception and still to this day

whether you agree or not (OP is right), don't compare the eras. "oh has more #1 hits than _" stupidest trend this generation loves to do.

it’s a weird comparison that goes both ways imo. i think streaming at the very least has made some relatively irrelevant achievements seems big like landing X songs on the top 10. i do think sales mean more now considering you get to choose the songs your listening to, but yea kinda incomparable

  • Nov 12, 2022

its true. ppl are less impressed with those stats as time goes on. physical sales are still the barometer for success

Spending money shows more dedication than streaming on repeat at low volume while you're asleep
