These days a lot of consoles don't even turn off completely unless you either turn the power switch on the back off or unplug the system itself. It'll just remain in sleep mode where it is still able to connect to the internet for updates. A lot of games these days also require the users to always be online or have an internet connection in order to start playing. Even if you're offline. I know for Sony they do this as a means to prevent piracy as the game is always checking to see if it is an official copy of the game or not. They actually do this same thing with DVD and Blu-Ray discs as well.

It's actually easier than ever to keep track of who is playing games or not.
