    The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) issued final versions of two new sets of regulations today.

    The C***issued new regulations on algorithms. They come into effect on March 1 and target “algorithmic recommendation” (算法推荐).

    Among many other requirements, the rules demand that companies:

    Provide the option to turn off personalization and opt out of automatic recommendations;

    Ensure that algorithms do not lead to different prices for different users;
    Allow users to remove personal information;

    Inform users “in a conspicuous manner” how recommendation algorithms work and what effect they have on user “rights and interests”;

    Protect the interests of minors, avoid causing addiction, and ensure they “obtain information that is good for physical and mental health”;

    Protect the interests of the elderly and “consider the needs of the elderly in travel, medical treatment, and consumption”; and

    Ensure that algorithms do not lead to the exploitation of workers and look after their interests, including “remuneration, rest, and vacation.”

    great point. honestly incredible about what this shows about the government of china and how much they care about their people. tiktok is a global social media network, nets billions of dollars and they're willing to gut it for the health of their people.

    Y’all realize this is targeted at TNCs right and the Chinese government is doing this in order to prevent data collection happening from oversea agencies? This isn’t for the benefit of the Chinese people. This legislature is specifically targeted towards companies that list their stocks overseas

    Wouldn’t preventing overseas data collection benefit the Chinese people? I think China being able to build up their own independent sphere is good because they aren’t reliant on services provided by corporations who’s loyalties lie elsewhere

    Exactly this, I don’t see how limiting data collection from TNCs is bad at all. OK the Chinese government conducts surveillance or whatever. Completely different topic. I think this is a W for many reasons

    He doesn’t own any businesses or any capital. Most western estimates put him at $1.2bn for absolutely no reason
