Dude has a multiple part series on the Gospel of Mark

enjoyed it, interesting perspective and conclusion, goes to show its a multilayered film with many different interpretations. obviously the Jesus/Rodrigues aspect is apparent throughout the film, and how to interpet that is where the a***ysis comes in. i think the take presented in this review perhaps gives the most satisfactory explanation of Rodrigues's character, but its a take that lends itself to or is only possible for those who have already processed their own faith and as such are firmly rooted in their beliefs.

but for many, who are unclear on their own faith, the film is still mainly about faith, and not torture, because depending on your denomination the film has different things to say and in order to know what it says you must know through which lens you are to interpret it.

bishop barron criticized the film for showcasing the faith as the "cultural elite" wants it to be i.e private, inward and quiet. not affecting public life. meanwhile protestants given their sola fide stance seem to have a more favorable view on it.

if the viewer has not already answered these questions of faith, they are what will be at the forefront of their minds as they watch the film (as they were for me)

The Skoptsy1 (Russian: скопцы, IPA: skɐpˈtsɨ; sg. скопец "eunuch") were a sect within the larger Spiritual Christianity movement in the Russian Empire, best known for practicing castration of men and the mastectomy of women in accordance with their teachings against sexual lust.2

The Skoptsy referred to themselves as the "White Doves" (белые голуби). Their aim was to perfect the individual by eradicating original sin, which they believed had come into the world by the first coitus between Adam and Eve. They believed that human genitals were the true mark of Cain, and that the true message of Jesus Christ included the practice of castration, that Jesus himself had been a castrate, and that his example had been followed by the apostles and the early Christian saints.3

They believed that human genitals were a mark of original sin, and that after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had the halves of the forbidden fruit grafted onto their bodies, forming testicles and breasts. Thus, the removal of these sexual organs restored the Skoptsy to the pristine state before the original sin. The Skoptsy maintained that they were fulfilling Christ's counsel of perfection in Matthew 19:124 and 18:8–9.5

It's so crazy the love you find in Christ. I remember back then I would always look to women to complete me and fill that void but now I always feel full. Theres nothing more filling than the love of God and feel so blessed to have been put on this path and eyes opened.
