im sorry wahi :(. Visually and sonically its unbelievably beautiful, truly astounding. but the entire premise of the movie did nothing to build on what blade runner created. we asked ourselves with the original, "wow, this differentiation between man and robot is crazy, who is to say one does not feel pain and understand life and one does", and 2049 does not do much to extend that question further and make us ask similar questions to ourselves.

they answered this by creating a story about a replicant who miraculously gives birth to a child

They make the worst movies imaginable. It’s as bad as faux art bullshit like Birdman

They don’t know how to film any action sequence and their brand of filmmaking has zero stakes to it

What’s it like being a pseudo-intellectual film kid who can’t enjoy anything and doesn’t have a soul...

Also, how are you alive right now?

I don’t think it’s as ‘deep’ of a question the first movie poses. yes so a replicant has birth, so what? it adds a minor caveat to the original question without really asking us anything more. the idea of a replicant having a baby is a minor extension on our concept of a replicant, an extension that, after the first movie, we probably could have inferred was possible just by the nature of the human like qualities the replicants possess. it’s also type cheap don’t you think. it’s like they were thinking to themselves, “how can we can build on this dichotomy between human and replicant even more” and thought “hmmmm let’s just have one give birth”... its not very provocative.

    edit: made it more concise.

But I think that’s part of our “job” or the fun as an audience to fill in the blanks. I just don’t know how much more they could’ve expanded on the idea of existentialism and what it means to be human without looking almost identical to the first film, which I don’t believe it is. This feels like a natural progression from the first.

i agree very much so with your point, but in that i believe for that very reason the movie is unnecessary (while still being a thoroughly enjoyable, beautiful, incredibly sounding movie, with really nice performances from Gosling and De Armas)

Nah in film there’s so few auteurs left in American cinema. I guess you can throw Wes Anderson in there but he’s redundant this point.

And Scorsese is gonna croak any year now unfortunatley. Idk who else to name
