some of these melodies zilla is hitting are crazy
and mula rapping in his non screaming voice is dope on here...
these guys can get big as hell tbh
honestly think mula really stepped up on this one. i don’t think it’s the fact that he isn’t being aggressive, i think it’s that he’s trying to sound serious or somber on some of these songs which make em phenomenal. his verse on Screaming At the Rain is the best of his career IMO and he’s only gonna get better
Zilla is goat as always but tbh he benefits from that too. the stylistic switch-ups throughout this album make it so fun to listen to
ive been listening to the tape for the past day pretty consistently and honestly the project is not great. zilla and sos are both consistently putting out their best performances and verses and hooks yet but the songs are barely put together in any meaningful way.
its like a tug of war between boring songs and amazing performances.
theres definitely a few tracks that keep your interest the whole time: draino has really interesting progressions and the howling atmospheric guitars and synths keep your interest between verses tho zel's verse is kinda lame.
s/o sos for penning some crazy ass verses. almost every one of his verses is impressive as f*** throughout the whole project
new album is ok but vol 1 was way better, this blends together even more than vol 1 imo besides like the two or three more melodic focused songs
i really haven’t stopped listening to this. I’m not even understanding the song structure critiques, they’re intentionally short and brutal songs. Draino’s structure works for its length and purpose, giving space for Denzel’s performance. But i love punk so this is nothing new to me. This is so far beyond the first one and really just amazing.
Also, this is really the Sos project. He stepped the f*** up in an insane way. Soul Burn might be my SOTY honestly.
as much as i love city morgue theyve never been great as designing merch imo. vlone collab is ehh
This album has significantly grown on me. Lowkey a top 10 rap album of the year. The songwriting is so much better than Vol 1 and the songs are more dynamic. Must partly be that Mike Dean touch.

dude, same. they ARE killing it and performing at a great level in the album (sos even surprising) but the songs just arent...memorable idk

it just doesnt seem like the songs go anywhere. the hooks dont progress the beats dont progress the structures dont progress. its just hook verse hook verse hook for like half the songs and they all like 2 minutes long.
i see people saying they dont mind the short punk style but even in punk songs the instrumentals progress and s*** but with these basic ass loops the beat starts to get boring n the tracks arent even that long

not even saying the beats are necessarily bad but they lose impact afterthe first 30 seconds of looping n u just start waiting for sos' verse
I just realized they didn’t censor Sosmulas lines about killing cops on this one

lmfao what???? so much punk is literally the same riff mad fast over and over. You’re bugging regardless of your critiques.

yea but blemishes and f***ed up timing and s*** keep the energy cohesive and fluid. having the same sample loop over and over again means u just start to tune it out cuz its not like theres any point in tuning in

Except the energy of punk is 95% instrumental, City Morgue is more of a balance between hard brutal production and two distinct vocal styles. They need the loops to be able to put the verses down, punk is not structured like hiphop with flow and verse structure. I mean, just look at Dead Kennedys. Vocals are garbage

you see what im saying then. i just feel like there's a lot of lost potential there. imagine the type of energy they could create with instrumentals that matched the energy of the performances

Nah i’m arguing against that. I think they are absolutely perfect for the vocals, way way more than on Vol 1 for the most part. S*** is excellent. Simple, catchy, brutal loops work for me because they make it work. Soul Burn is a great sounding instrumental on its own, but Sos makes that song fantastic with the energy he brings and how his verse progresses. He commands the s*** around his voice. Zilla does the same with his verses and melodies

yea soul burn is one of the best tracks on the tape but its cuz its so minimalistic. the beat sounds like some s*** off of die lit and sos fills the mix with his voice so the song is consistently making interesting changes.
take minimizya for example. the intro is just a loop of the sample. the drop is just adding in the hats kick and snare. the only beat progressions is the quiet ass open hat in the left channel dropping out during the first half of the hook and the hats dropping out at the beginning of idk's verse for like 2 bars.
youre pretty much just listening to a loop of a guitar and the same exact drum pattern for 2 and a half minutes
legendary zilla song for those that don’t know much about him
PAID A COUPLE THOUSAND FOR THA CASKET

Bro. How the actual f*** does Soul Burn sound like ANYTHING off die lit?!?!?!? I can’t really take anything you say seriously if you’re saying s*** like that.
