Been running back the 3-album stretch and “Classic” lowkey stands out as one of the more interesting pockets Drake tapped into sonically. It doesn’t hit you like the obvious highlights, but the more you sit with it, the more it feels like a glimpse into a direction he could really flesh out.

The production is what sells it. It’s got that stripped, almost skeletal bounce but still feels polished enough to sit in his current era. Not as glossy as the big singles, not as moody as the timestamp records either. It sits in this middle space where he sounds comfortable experimenting without overcommitting.

Drake’s delivery is different too. He’s not leaning heavy into melodies or full rap mode, it’s more conversational, almost like he’s floating over the beat instead of attacking it. Reminds me a bit of how he used to test flows on loosies back in the NWTS/IYRTITL era, but updated with the cadence he’s been using lately.

What makes it interesting in the context of the 3 albums is how it contrasts everything else. You’ve got the obvious club joints, the introspective cuts, the R&B stuff… and then “Classic” just sits there in its own lane. It doesn’t sound like he’s chasing anything, if anything, it feels like he’s just trying something out to see if it sticks.

Lowkey could see this being a blueprint if he ever decides to go left again. It’s one of those tracks that makes you wonder what a full project in that pocket would sound like.

habibti bringing back the poetry n atmospheric bag that made drake famous on tc and nwts and been missing since then till habibti is why its goated

only a few songs on scorp is the other time he lightly touched back on that famous bag such as jaded but a whole project rekindling that skill is beyond dope

If he had put Zetro on the album, that’d take it

    S*** is fire

He has def done downtempo R&B before but the way it’s structured is pretty cool. Sounds like a late night DJ took a restroom break and let the song loop at the end there

    Wish it was longer

There are a few joints on these projects where I wish he kept a good idea going a bit longer rather than do a beat switch or some flow change smh

Like on Hoe Phase I love that beginning and the direction it was headed, sounded like it was picking up from where HNVM left off in a great way

Then it changed into that Fergalicious type beat lol. Which I like too but idk , wish it went on longer

  • I find the 80s electronic and dance soundscape of “Goose and The Juice” far more interesting. It sounds like something that’d fit perfectly on a 2011 Blood Orange album. I absolutely love how silky smooth his modern flow sounds on vintage production.

Also, just a sidenote but it probably has one of the funniest lines on the album: “The venue that your wedding is at has some shady reviews”.

Also, “Q&A” with its toned down Brazilian Baile inspo is seductively addicting. It’s such a unique take on a classic Drake approach and I love the idea of having a sit down interview with that one person where it was never clear what truly happened.

“Why did you do what you did to me? Was it out of boredom” Realest line.

Said in the album thread but whoever produced the second half of that joint is super tapped in because that’s a niche soundcloud wave I’ve been f***ing with lately for example

we’re giving credit to artists for how they COULD’VE fleshed out a sound but didn’t?

I agree that's not a good thing to give credit for, it's a great song though imo and didn't need to be fleshed out any further
